ETA Rollover certs and jobs

macwhizardmacwhizard Member Posts: 66 ■■□□□□□□□□
Is there a growing demand for CST, CNST certs and are valuable as CCNA, CCNP, MSCE, etc... ?

Anyone got hired or promoted or had troubles(being purchased/transfered) because of ETA Rollover certificates ?.

I've A+, expired Apple certs and planning to take CCNA next month. Should i take CST and CNST or just the CNST ?. any ideas ?. Thanks.

Just in case you didn't notice, there's a long thread with lots of info about the ETA certs here:

Please post other related question in that topic.

To answer your question: no, the CST and CNST are not as 'valuable' as CCNA, CCNP, or MSCE for example. Those two are more like A+ and Network+ respectively.

I got the rollover earlier this month, I should be getting my package with certs this week. So far, nobody I talked to has heard of CST or CNST, but LOTS of people have heard of ETA. They just didnt know they certified people.

I think the fact that the rollover also leads to their other certification, and having membership in this long-existed organization is worth it. Besides, the study material that you get from StudyExam4Less is REALLY good.

the membership isnt free. You have to pay again every year to keep your status. But that's cool, it's a reasonable amount anyway. ($25)

I'll write a 'review' about this rollover when I get my stuff.

    Cheers.

    Hi.

I've taken the CNST rollover, after getting my A+ and Network+, and I think that it has benefitted me slightly.

I recently had a job interview were I basically had to convince the HR and Technical manager that I was capable of learning their environment and coping with the training.

Having the Extra cert, from another organisation and being a member of a professional organisation helped swing it.

I'm still waiting for the HR to get back from holiday to organise the 2nd interview tho icon_rolleyes.gif

I believe that it helps fill out your CV, and no-one is going to bin it because you've got that one extra thing.

Well it is nice to see folks here getting the "well duh" designed into the program :D

(I'll make my case about that in a second)...

Yes, the two "what's in it for me?" are the study materials and showing that extra edge in an interview.

Yes, since ETA-I.ORG follows ISO standards, you have to show 10 hours a year of improving your career and sending $25. That $25 is waived if you have added an ETA cert, say, Customer Support Specialist @ ?? $50. USD $$
(That is what I did for 2006)

OK. My 2nd point. Frankly, I hang here because the folks here have a clue.

I have seen other sites where people spin up all sorts of trash, like you need to spend $25 to see your cert results and other complete BS. I don't have the time for even listening to folks who sound like they are on LSD.

Sorry to say a few things are going un-noticed that make the #25 well worth more than the cost of membership. For example, the Job Board.

I will blame myself and the ETA for that. The web site, previously, sucked. It is getting better, and it still has a ways to go. The ETA is our org, not the manafactures org. So if we don't give feedback, and a small amount of cash with certs and membership, they don't change things.

And the web site is getting eaiser to find what you get. icon_cool.gif

I'm really sorry that more letters alone tends to work with HR. I didn't create human nature. Just using it to help the folks with clue.

Since the folks here have clue... I'll give a sneak peek. There is another org I have been with forever... The Network Professional Association. They have the grand daddy of all, Certified Network Professional. Well, behind the scenes I've been knitting the NPA and the ETA. We're dusting off the ASSOCIATE CNP.

The end game will be being able to visit a local chapter (for most of you) as a physical meeting with product demo's, yada-yada.

The "what's in it for me?" will be more letters, more training materials (some really slick stuff too!) and for the NPA, your gradual move to a full blown CNP. That takes years of actually proving you work this stuff, not "just" pass tests.

Look for this as an early Christmas present from StudyExam4Less with other partners. FYI, CNST certified people get a special discount. The bundle of training materials is awsome in this one.

Before I run off I'm wondering if anyone here is coming to Las Vegas for the annual convention? http://www.src07.org

I'm putting together my annual psyc geek presentation now. This year it is: Walking Your Thought -- No tag line developed for this one yet,. The premsis is your sub-concious judgements guide your concious choices <so be careful what you tell yourself!>

OK. Ive babbled too long. My orgional intent was to put a spotlight on the benifits of the ETA that go unnoticed, like the job board.

The ETA_I has been around 'forever'... Being geek-based, they have not been a marketing machine... With other more popular tests becoming rather expensive and never really popular outside of US/UK/Canada... The CST and CNST are seeing turning points. So are other ETA-I tests.

We didn't get the 100,000 new members. We only got 85,000. icon_cool.gif
Motorola came on board with a 5 year plan so the ETA-I will become much better known.

I am sad to say that the Certified Network Professional, which was around for years got a false re-start. I will not be renewing my membership with the NPA or my CNP. I did give it my best shot and the left hand didn't seem to know what the right hand was doing. Instead I will be working on bringing the ETA-I out in more countries. (I'm in Europe now til Jan working on exactly that).

    Tcat,

Any idea about the promo code on studyexam4less site ?. Thanks.
  • TcatTcat Member Posts: 66 ■■□□□□□□□□
The promo code is for persons or web sites that wish to promote and get a referral fee. Some folks do pretty good with that! I do not use a referral code as I see this as my duty in life and not a way to make a few bucks a month. However it is there for use!

I ordered the CNST rollover in June and only just got it last month, my order got "lost" in transaction even though payment was taken. However after a few months I contacted them and they were more than happy with dealing with my order, so very good customer service imo.

Got the CNST just for another cert, it doesn't hurt to have another thing on your CV :) Yep, when I got my kit it included the CNST cert, the ETA-I membership cert, a wallet card, the hologram sticker and Vista Beta 2 CD and Key, which is great but I've been already using the final release version since it was released in Nov '06, but the thought of providing new technology to members for advancement is great.

It'd be great if they keep sending CD's with licence keys, esp, full versions. icon_lol.gif:D:D

Part of wishing everyone here a Great 2007 (for me) means making sure you have at least some of the tools to get there. icon_wink.gif

Please let me preface that while I am not a Harvard economics professor, I am not the dullest bulb in the box and I'm relatively speaking, old. icon_cool.gif

I have been struggling through several books from Clayton M. Christensen, including "The Innovator's Dilemma". This work examines *why* drive makers like Memorex and Control Data failed to new firms like MiniScribe and Conner. And later, why *they* failed to upstarts like Hitachi and Fujistu drives.

The parallels I see to this thread are uncanny.

As many of you have noticed, The ETA-I is well established in some circles, while clearly failing to "get the word out" they have certification tests.

That has changed, and many people will fail to see that because of their successful certifications in other areas, such as wireless. (Makes sense since most wireless networking is RF and not optical and the ETA-I started with radio certs).

So as I said here almost a year ago... rollover for the extra letters and get the included study materials. That is your payoff now. Later when the ETA-I is more mainstream you will be able to show how visionary you we're being a member from the pioneer days.

I assume some cynical folks will go for this message as a personal plug to enrich myself (being the old fart who designed this whole gig). All I can say is if you look at the math of what you invest for what you get, it clearly doesn't 'pencil out' this is making me money. The reality is 99.9% of my income comes from supporting CompTIA. For 2007, I'm forecasting my living will "drop" to 98% coming from CompTIA (CTT+ and CDIA+ being my biggest bread winners).

The next big thing for ETA-I will be the RESI tests. As silicon valley execs told me 5 years ago, Home Networking/Entertainment is the next "big thing". This is now obvious with the CompTIA D-HTI test in beta, with the sugar daddy being none other then the massive CE group.

D-HTI is still free as a beta. If you are somewhat ready for Network+, go try D-HTI (please). If you wind up actually working for a home tech install company, look hard at anyone of the 5 RESI tests done. Someone other than my team is working on study material for those, and early returns are its good material.

I don't have a good feeling about Vista for 2007, but that is a different topic.

Wishing you a safe and successful 2007.

Hey folks. Really sorry I have been invisible since my return from Euorpe in Jan. I got back to Mexico and moved to a larger place. <it was hell>

Anyway, we had the ETA-I annual conference a couple weeks ago.

The good news is RESI tests are done.

    AND

CNST is getting a "makeover". The goal is to make a full career path withing IT, like the fiber and electronics folks have. The working model is to have "mini"-tests which can be taken *after* having a CNST. They are called endorcements. There will be endorcements for security, Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, etc.

The board really got the message from higher ed to create a full path, not just 3 "children" in IT.

More soon. I'm attempting to finish practice tests for Customer Service Specialist cert.

    Best,
