How do you deal with sitting down for the majority of the day?

I'm just about to get back to my studies and I'm apprehensive about sitting down for long durations.

I've recently been trying my best to get up and about but it can be really difficult seeing as I work within IT and need to use my computer and desk.

How do you guys deal with it?

Hit the gym, walk as much as you can, take the stairs wherever possible, enroll in a dancing class etc.

There's no right / wrong way to tackle this. It all comes down to exercising.

Is a stand up desk a possibility? Even if only for parts of the day.

Take every opportunity to get off your butt. Go to someone's desk instead of emailing, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Bring your lunch instead of going out.

Eat a really spicy breakfast/lunch and take a Dulcolax with each meal. You'll be running back and forth to the bathroom all day. Plenty of exercise.

When you get to be an old guy like me, you have to get up to use the bathroom every 15 minutes, so I'm not sitting all day.

well if you are going to be sitting for long periods, you should look at better chairs.

Take a look at Herman Miller Chairs. The Mirra model is the best. I've worked at two companies that had this. These are upwards to a grand each!

Lift heavy weights (GYM) for 40minutes at least 3x times a day

during lunch, go to the gym or find a yoga class or something to break the day (do it 2xtimes a week?)

Drink a lot of water during the day (bathroom trips increase..)

Kettlebells at home they work well for me. Just 2 - 3 different movements 2 times a week maybe 3 if I have time. I usually trail run once a week as well ~2 miles. Other than that stretch and hope things don't fall apart. Oh I do go to a neck specialist (upper cervical) for C1 and C2 adjustments, I have a jacked up neck so it's a must have.....

I bought a Fitbit. It gets me off my ass every hour. It shows me how little I walk and so I get up and go for walks throughout the day. I'm investing in a bike to ride around a bit. The Fitbit isn't a thing to say "Look how far I walked!", but it does say "Look how little you walked today, get up you lazy ass!".

Around where I work, I usually walk 3-4 miles a day. When I go to the beach for vacation, I'm walking 10-15 miles a day. Maybe I should move! :D

Find something you enjoy - walking, biking, hiking, swimming, whatever. It works best if you don't have to go too far out of your way to do it. Then, just go do it. You might have to force yourself at first, but eventually it's easy.

I think that shows you should vacation more ;)

When I was in the office I used to go for a walk every day, roughly 1 mile. Now that I'm back at home I started going to the gym 3x a week, and I'll be either running or cycling everyday. Got to balance out all that sitting with some movement. I also make it a habit of not sitting still for more than 1 hour before I get up to walk around for a minute.

I run / lift weights in the morning or during the afternoon at least 3x / week. I take the stairs going between floors in my building, as well as going to / coming from my car in the parking garage. I've also increased my water consumption for bathroom breaks. Ran 3.5 miles this morning, got into work a little while ago and I've already got about 8,000 steps in for the day.

We have these and use them at least half a dozen times a day. We also have pool tables and Foos ball available.

Amazon has a 2 pack exercise ball set. I bought it and have one at home and work.
During my deployments, I'd take 2-3 boxes of water, set my computer and monitors and work standing up.

I just bought a desk cycle from Amazon. I exercise my legs while typing, like riding a bicycle.

I commute via bicycle, have a standing desk in work and I also try to go for a 20-30 minute walk at lunch a couple of times a week.

I make it a point to get up every chance I get. After completing each task I stand up to stretch, get a drink, or briefly walk around the office. I go for a 30 minute walk on my lunch break. I also take the stairs whenever possible.

My daily commute consists of a short bike ride and riding the train. I like to stand in the train because I sit all day at work.

When I work from home I try to get some planks in.

Outside of work hours I like to jog, swim, and play tennis.

I sit on at an exercise ball so I find that I tend to get up more often. Plus it's more convenient to roll out of the way. I've been complementing getting one of these - https://www.autonomous.ai/smartdesk-sit-to-stand-height-adjustable-standing-desk - the price looks right and it seems a bit more sturdy because I have a 5 monitor setup.

Change your diet plan so that you eat only once. Big meal at 5-6 pm right after work and use your lunch time for exercise its really not that hard to go an entire day without eating. Get a treadmill and run 1 mile as soon as you get up in the mourning should only take you 6-8 mins.
