Linux job experience

Hi guys , I am currently studying for the CompTIA Linux + exam and would like some help from those guys already working as Linux admin . Everybody knows that there is a gap between what you learn in theory and what you do in your job, so I was thinking to bridge this gap maybe those experienced Linux admin could share some of their detailed work , I mean what they do on a daily basis like some specific tasks ; for example tasks assigned by your superior to complete for the day, this could benefit all folks without any job related experience. Everybody knows that certs without experience is tough to land a job so I think this could benefit all rookies and if a lot of experienced admin/tech contribute , we could expand this to other certs .

what do you guys think ?

    Provision new Linux machines with automated mechanisms -- essentially picking out an IP or subnet and hostname.
    Resize disks and filesystems on them.
    Write documentation so that other people can do the same things I can.
    Make elaborate GUI based systems to that non-Linux admins can click instead of using the CLI.
    Catch up on Netflix and anime.
    Edit scripts in programming languages I don't know in order to fix problems that the user/customer can't explain correctly.
    Run $(yum update) and/or $(apt-get upgrade)

    I don't really do much.

    I've done a lot in previous jobs tho, from AWS administration, to scripting/programming, configuration management using Salt/Ansible/Chef, setting up monitoring, creating custom monitoring scripts, managing logs with tools such as Splunk, routing/switching, VMware admin, databases, web dev, security hardening, racking stacking, hardware maintenance, work on and test DR, cabling, data center audits, software audits, documentation audits, analytics based on tickets or monitoring data.

    The duties usually depend on the role. In addition to this thread, look up job descriptions for Linux roles available in your area.

    Nice start. So basically someone with a Linux + will start doing those tasks. More detail information about micro tasks will be a plus.

    Just check out those linux jobs and one of those jobs mentionned :
    • Experience using LINUX command line environment and common commands
    • So what basic commands are they looking for ?
    • More people are most welcome to contribute this thread.

    When they refer to common commands, they're referring to the contents of this book:
    The Linux Command Line by William E. Shotts, Jr.

    The Linux+ is a very broad certification. If you go thru all the material and actually understand and retain most of the info, you'll definitely know enough about the Linux CLI. The rest of the skillset is either learned on the job or on your own outside of work hours. I taught myself scripting/programming (altho basic bash scripting IS on the Linux+ cert) and config mgmt and other common utilities.

    ok guys I think I will come straight to the point , in the future I want to work for a company name Linkbynet as a Linux system administrator but those guys do need people with Linux experience

    that 's why I want to leverage my skillset to my best for a job with them. They do all these configs remotely so if by any means I could know what they do on a daily basis and get info from insiders that could be great.

    Below is an overview of my job duties. I get asked to do a lot more, but this is probably a good starting point:

    -keep all systems up to date with a Satellite server (~ 250)
    -perform server hardening with IPtables, Firewalld, SELinux, and TCP wrappers.
    -install and configure web applications, then secure the front end
    -evaluate new technologies based on business needs and determine if implementation will be beneficial in production environment
    -create documentation on current processes and newly engineered solutions
    -mentor junior linux admins and help desk personnel in troubleshooting techniques as well as professional procedures
    -monitor infrastructure availability, uptime, and capacity
    -automate routine tasks, provide positive control on server side configurations, and centrally manage servers with Ansible
    -troubleshoot any and all issues with system configurations, backups, filesystems, user access, and network services (NTP, DNS, SMTP, etc)

    If I have downtime I'm usually studying a new technology.
