I'm guessing this is actually quite normal in any field but whats the deal with favoritism around the office?

It not only happens on your side of the table. You will have clients and co-workers that will go to you because you "resolve issues faster" or if they have trouble talking to your colleague, if you are nicer, etc. They will bypass processes and assign **** to you directly.

I used to work as a contractor at the old AOL campus in Dulles, VA. My job required me to move from building to building all day. My co-workers and I noticed that when we would go out on a service call, we always saw the same people standing around and smoking. Yes, AOL back then was laid back but this was ridiculous. We even wondered to each other whether they actually did any work there.

Unfortunately for them, three months later, AOL cleaned house and laid off most of their staff from that site.

I used to work right next to the AOL office in Dulles VA.... You still located in NOVA???

No. The traffic is crazy up in NOVA. I had to leave town. I am currently contracting in the Middle East.
