Interviewing and seeing flat out lying on resume

First time interviewing people for a part time level 1 and possibly level 2 person for the team. The 4 candidates have all pretty much lied about their qualifications. They have all gone from "Completing MSCA" to "Well, I've started studying for the exams."
How do you handle the rest of the interview? I've had a problem with throwing technical questions at them because I will feel bad seeing someone flounder based on my first interview.

In my experience adding just one cert that I worked on made a huge difference in the callbacks and offers I received. I had A+ completed and I was actively studying Network+. I put Network+ (expected <next month>) on my resume and it was regularly brought up. A few interviewers mentioned that shows motivation.

I'm not suggesting adding it at any other time than an entry level position where certs and especially motivation play a huge part.

That being said, lots of good info from everyone. I've put completing my MCSA on my resume but I have at least passed one of the exams. I've completed 2 of three now but yeah, don't put a certification as "in progress" unless you have completed a certification.

Just to be clear. When I say go for it I don't mean to list certs in progress as being held. I mean something like the following:

CERTIFICATIONS
CISSP, C|EH, C|HFI, CCNA Security, OSCP (in progress)

Adding what I am actively working on has never caused me an issue during an interview. It has only fostered talking points which I've used to my advantage.

I was wondering what a CV was, apparently UK uses Curriculum Vitæ and Americans use Resumes. What do you expect from a country that calls a car trunk, a boot.

I wonder if they calls Cowboy Boots you wear, Cowboy trunks?

I think for "in progress" ...

Maybe add an expected completion date?
Only add ones that are near completion date?
Bring it up during the interview? As some suggested.

Sure there are folks who stretch the "in progress", who are indeed lying. But I think there are folks who show responsibility for their career/life and work their butt off. These folks are not "lying".

You hear of advise to applicants, show that you're motivated and not just letting life go by. We'll that's what they're doing. It's unfortunate if a hiring manager sees that as "lying" and perhaps in this case it's just a mismatch of employer/applicant.

Commonly? I've never heard of it before, I reckon casue I don't gots one of them fancy college diplomas is why.

Recently came across "Studying for CISSP and CISM" and "Attending CISSP and CISM class" under Certifications and Academic sections of a consultant's resume.

Maybe I should have phrased it differently “A CV is commonly used within higher education in the US.” I believe a CV is pretty standard fare that is used by professors when they’re applying for positions in universities and colleges.

I never heard of it either until I asked for a letter of recommendation from one of my professors to use for my study abroad application and he asked me to send him my CV since he really didn’t know anything about me and I had never taken any of his classes before.

Ridiculous. I'm studying for CCIE Route and Switch. Have been for the past 10 years. Gonna have to list that one.

Certifications:
CCENT
CCIE Security (pending test and lab results)

ISC2 doesn't even allow those who have passed the CISSP exam to list it on their resume. Seriously (not talking to you Mike7, just to everyone else), if you submit a resume for endorsement, and have something silly like "CISSP Pending" or "CISSP In Progress" it is rejected and you're required to fix it.

If someone who has already passed the test can't even use it why should someone who hasn't even picked up a book. Guess there were too many associates running around calling themselves "ISC2 CISSP Associates", made up stuff you see on LinkedIn.

So can we put MCSA Windows 10 (in Progress) on our resume, if we are going to order the exam book next month? :P It's in progress because we decided to roder the book next month:P

I think people wants everything so fast these days, and there is no easy way to break into IT without hard work.

I wish there were more colleges like WGU that tied certifications with the classes.

To the OP. I would ask if the interview has copies of the certifications in their portfolio during the interview process. Beyond this maybe you can ask them to bring copies of their certs to interview.

@NetworkingStudent The applicants had none and I was the second interviewer (Small company). While they both had some skills that would fill some holes we currently have but no positions open, I was upset that for the position we are looking to fill, they have only bought the books and might have read a chapter or two.
