Got the Call!

Got the call today, as long as I pass my medical and psychological exam I will become a Detective. Been with my agency for a little over a year as an Investigator doing mobile forensics amongst other things. Will need to attend the academy which is about 5 months in length.

LOL part of my duties involve training people on the forensic process for mobile devices. I have an excellent clip from CSI Miami where they bring in a phone, the actress says computer forensics? The reply: surface computing. Bam they instantly pull up the text message admitting to murder. Never happens (or at least in the year I've been at it I have not see a text like that). NCIS is great because they break the law and all is well. Sure go ahead and hack the Pentagon...it's all good.

    Thanks all!

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, what's the difference between a Detective and Investigator? I always though they were two names for the same job.

Depend on where you are or what Agency. But most of the time its arrest powers. In my state we have Investigators who only investigate specific types of crimes forensics , Computer Forensics, Taxes, Insurance and a lot more and when they get the information they need they go and pass the information off to someone else to make the arrest. But as a detective for a law enforcement agency you can investigate and arrest

Wow congrats!!! The system seems so different than Australia

in Australia you need to be a Cop for 3 years then you can apply for specialisation

Not sure how you can be a detective in the police force? Well done mate!

At my agency the difference between an Investigator and Detective is the power to arrest. I do everything a Detective does, but when it comes time for an arrest the Detective does it.

Typical departments in my state would have you on patrol for a number of years before you have a shot at becoming a Detective (this is true of most departments). In my case, my agency handles specialized crimes and only has Detectives so if you are brought on board you are a Detective.

Psych and Medical Tuesday/Thursday next week so I'll know if I am good to go.

Pretty sure I passed the psych, but at my medical today my blood pressure was very high. Genes and stress have finally caught up with me. The plus is the Doctor said as long as my primary care clears me, he'll clear me so I should be good to go. Now just gotta keep on keepin on with the working out and gear up for August!

    Nice, congrats man!

I actually really wanted to be a cop after I gave up on doing medicine and before I got into tech.

Breaking my foot to the point where I had to get screws put in, coupled with an already pre-broken knee put an end to that since I'd never survive the mandatory training, or long hours of walking on patrol.

That's mean you will get a gun and can legally shoot people? I mean only people that commit crimes like Jay walking or changing lanes without signalling.
Still searching for the corner in a round room.

In theory yes, but my position is one in which we employ tactics to ensure anonymity. Push comes to shove you have to do what you have to do, but the gun isn't in my list of reasons to make the switch.
