in General Certification
Does anybody know of any reputable/well known software testing certifications? Seen some entry level Software QA Engineer positions that want either experience or a Testing Certification. Any ideas?

    Certifications

    Several certification programs exist to support the professional aspirations of software testers and quality assurance specialists. No certification currently offered actually requires the applicant to demonstrate the ability to test software. No certification is based on a widely accepted body of knowledge. This has led some to declare that the testing field is not ready for certification.[43] Certification itself cannot measure an individual's productivity, their skill, or practical knowledge, and cannot guarantee their competence, or professionalism as a tester.[44]
    Software testing certification types
    • Exam-based: Formalized exams, which need to be passed; can also be learned by self-study [e.g., for ISTQB or QAI][45]
    • Education-based: Instructor-led sessions, where each course has to be passed [e.g., International Institute for Software Testing (IIST)].

    Yes, I have read through that, thank you though rogue. I have no idea which of those to pursue. I'm looking for the A+, CCNA of software testing certs, if it even exits. Something entry level that I can study for on my own and take locally here in Seattle. Anybody have any real world experience with one of these tests? Whether they've taken or known somebody that has taken it.

    I got an email today from the MS Learning program. It looks like they are coming out with an exam for software testing: 70-497 Essential Software Testing with Visual Studio 2012. Nothing seems published as of yet.

    Oh that would be awesome! I'm currently using 2010 for my C# needs, didn't even realize the RC for 2012 was out. I guess I can just skip a generation. Thanks for the heads up Robert!

    I'm wondering what if you were able to find what you were looking for. I too live in Seattle and I've seen a lot of mobile device QA positions needing black-box testing knowledge (entry level). A software testing certificate seems to be the logical next step.

    I couldn't really find any well known Software Testing Certifications, but I did find this:

    Software Testing Certificate | UW Professional & Continuing Education

    It's a 9 month long software testing certificate program through UW. (3 hours a week in downtown Seattle) I was going to do it, but it wasn't approved for my VA benefits yet. Instead I'm doing the C#/.Net Development certificate program.

    Generally, you will get much farther in testing in terms of pay, title, and advancement opportunities with a certification that says you know how that device works and how it will be used in the field, than with a certification saying that you know testing. If testing certifications are important to those employers--and they rarely are--you will see that right in the job posting where they list which certifications they value.

    Some employers will additionally prefer or require someone who has familiarity with scripting or particular software development or testing tools.

    Hence I am doing this, in which they include a fair amount of automated testing using NUnit.

    Not to side-track your question, but I noticed you live in the US. If you are thinking about becoming a software tester as a career, I thought I would share a few of my personal observations.

    Software quality assurance takes a certain mindset to do a really good job. I rarely come across really good QA engineers who have the right blend of skills and talent. Specifically, the technical wherewithal to develop the test-cases to test components at an API level or to develop test automation suites which adequately regression test not just functionality but negative edge conditions.

    These days I find that most software testing has become basic use-case testing where the skill requirements are easily labor-arbitraged to a third-party. Mind you, there is nothing wrong with it because sometimes it's quantity of hours and work effort that is required to effectively test some kinds of software. But I typically would advise that in the US, unless you want to go beyond basic software testing, it's not a career I would recommend.

    But if you are simply looking to learn a bit more to help augment your own career, then by all means rock on...

    Well said Paul. I think most people who want to get into Software Testing are just using it as a stepping stone for development. For example you don't have a CS degree, Software Testing will help you get your foot in the door.

    I know it's a really old discussion but just wanted to get back feedback on the testing certificate offered at UW. How is the course quality in terms of leaning ? Does employers in pacific northwest area value this course?

    Looking at UW's website, I see they do give introduction to testing from cloud and mobile point of view as well, which is good and seems like they keep the course up to date.

    Hands on QTP
    Selenium Testing
    Advanced Web Application Security Testing

    Pick anyone training course and start training with reputed training center such as Koenig Solutions, Softwaretestinghelp, Istqb, Testinginstitute, Guru99
