New start lol...

Well, needless to say I have an opportunity for a fresh new start in the direction I want to take my career.  I have up to a year to "define" what I want to do and the funds to accommodate it.  I'm pretty unhappy in the security position I'm in (infosec/compliance) and need to be much more hands on and in the dirt.  I started as a sys admin and although the work was fun, once you get very familiar with the site it gets dreadfully boring.

I have had a keen interest in Amazon AWS and virtualization technologies.  Also, I really enjoyed red team activities while I did them in the gov.

Here is a very brief exp spread:
sys admin (ten) networks/enterprise environments (10 years), vulnerability assessment specialist (7 years), information assurance specialist (5 dreadful years), infosec specialist (8 years).  CISSP, CCNA, S+, CEH and some forensics certs.

So I guess my question is, how do I figure out what I want to do when I grow up?  I want to develop a skill that will be relevant in the next ten to twenty years and be able to work remotely.

Ideas, experience, input?

Good to see you posting again!

The question is very difficult to answer...If you work for a service provider, you'll get to see many client setups and get quick hands on experience, but you might not like it

Read this book if you have time:

Certs: GSTRT, GPEN, GCFA, CISM, CRISC, RHCE

You want to work remotely? Or do you want to work from home? Working remotely generally means not going into the office but could involve a lot of driving or other travel.

Hey!  Forums changed alot lol.  Yeah I guess the question should be: "if you could start all over, what would you choose?"

Fortunately I have about a year where I can start on a different path.  I enjoy security but the paperwork is mind numbing sometimes.

I guess I want to work from wherever the hell I want lol.  I hate the concept of being confined to an area.  I don't mind travel but I am more concerned about where I should attempt to put my efforts.  I love IT in general but I am thinking about solely going cloud or virtualization for a year.

You might want to look into either the pre or post-sales role then. Both get you out and about with an IT focus and the experience would be valuable the rest of your career.
