I dunno just feels weird, red flag?

Yes. I was once looking for a second income and had applied for a Help Desk slot. At the time I was looking for all night positions, and help desk roles was the majority.  I was told I was qualified based on my resume and the hiring manager would like to bring me on. I never talked to the hiring manager..

I did take another night role, just not with that company. I don't remember the reasoning for not taking the slot, but I am sure  it had to come down to money.

Have not, looking forward to anyone else's experiences here. How large is the company, does everything else seem on the up and up?

The last contracting job, I had a 10 minute phone interview with the HR Manager and Director of IT, where he asked me extremely basic questions (what is the purpose of DHCP, what is Active Directory, etc).  I received the job offer the next morning, and I had to coordinate moving to a different area of California.  No video call, no meeting of current employees, just report to work on X date.  Ended up being an awesome job.

Its an info sec analyst role, no questions asked on initial call with hiring manager just seemed to go off what was on my CV. His linked in is not updated to say he is working at the company, just has his prvious company to present date! Huge company! Offices in 129 countries.

That's kinda how I was hired for my infosec role.  We had a bad skype connection, so we just ended up just talking on the phone for about 30mins.  However, the interview was just like tell me your history of working at all of your IT jobs, so I went thru them all & he liked what he heard.  Hired!

Not once, but was hired twice. First time I was hired back in 2011 after chatting about for 15 minutes with the COO. I believe it was around 11 am I chatted with him, and at 2 PM I just received an offer letter. The second was in 2012, for the same project with a different company. I had literally 7-10 minutes chat with the hiring manager, mostly was about the salary/benefits and got the offer letter the next day. The first company was a small company, and the latter was one of the biggest tech firms in the world. So, yes company do hire just by telephonic interview, and it not a big deal. I did hire a few people for my own team, after having around 20-30 minutes of the interview.

Yep, my current position.  It's a contract position that has been extended once so far. I did a phone interview with a person that I don't think even worked for the company I'm at now, and I feel like I bombed that interview.  I was definitely skeptical, but it was with a well-known company so I took.  It aligned with where I wanted to go in my career and was a huge pay raise.

Since December I've interviewed for two positions and got offered them both based on a phone interview only. I think its pretty typical now in the contracting industry.

I just did it and it was weird as well.  I did have a video skype call so we saw each other.   Overall the job has been stressful with a hint of Meh.

Typical, but dangerous.  there was one position I was hired for and the PM said to me when I asked how many times he was on base that he was there every week.  I was not interviewed by the gov guy.  That made me a little nervous. My first day, I expected the PM to meet me, he did not.  It took me forever to get processed in. The gov guy was PISSED.  He also informed me that the PM NEVER came on site.  No communication at all. I was fired the 3rd day because I had no badge or CAC and it took me forever to get on base.  The gov guy wanted me out.  Never again.

I have. When I got interviewed for my previous position as a pentester at BAH it was all over the phone. It should also be noted that I was in the midwest at the time and they were on the east coast, so a face to face meeting obviously was not going to happen. Now when I visted for our house hunting trip, I did meet up with some of the team members for drinks but this was after I was hired.
I'm not allowed to say what my previous occupation was, but let's just say it rhymes with architect.

As already mentioned heavily here, for a contracting role, it is quite common to receive a job offer after only a phone screen. For other positions it is rare, and depends on circumstances such as the location of the interviewer.

it happens! But its pretty weird. So my second to third job I only had a phone interview and they decide to make over 80% increment offer. It was a reputable company so I did accept it. Eventually I found out the manager had forgotten to arrange for my 2nd round, this was after i had sealed the offer lol.

Know a female colleague who only had a phone interview and was scheduled to interview onsite. Manager from US came down on the wrong date (it was public holiday) and schedule her to go to the hotel for interview. It sounds so weird and funny to think about it.

If you feel uneasy, maybe you can request an onsite or webcall to see physical office?

I don't particularly find it unusual these days. Especially among companies that may have a geographically remote workforce.

Not for a virtual position, but I’ve been hired for a position with just a phone call.  Also, I was not living in the state where the position was located.

I had one company interview me just once by phone for about an hour and a couple days later they offered me the role paying me fairly as well as relocation costs on top of it all.  I stayed there for about 4 years before I left for a different job.  The people and the role was good and I have no qualms about that job.    Just do your research about the company as much as you can beforehand and of course take reviews with a grain of sand.  Look at how they are growing, the current size, the type of industry they are in and what services do they provide.  See any press releases that they have released, or partner companies.  Just do your research and you can get a good idea if they are decent or not before hand.  And worst case, you can always quit and find a new job.

It's no longer uncommon, I didn't meet anyone on my team face to face until nearly 3 months after I took my current role. A flexible workplace is becoming more common with tools like Skype and Webex. When I worked at Cisco you could literally WFH anytime you wanted, in fact they provided an entire CVO Home Office kit for you.

I don't think a phone / video call only interview is in itself a red flag.  If you live out of state, interview for a remote job, or the hiring company has key leaders in many locations then it makes sense.
I've interviewed for a number of positions over the phone and have taken two of them with success.

I experienced the same, got hired for a part time gig a couple of years ago. At first I thought it was a scam. But we had a good 30 mins conversation, move on to testing drugs (they paid for), and I met my manager my first day of work. He travel site to site and does not live in the same city. Also had the same experience with a full time role I was looking into. But we couldn't get on the same page.
