Question on Engineering Job Titles

I have a buddy who is a mechanical engineer (a "real engineer") and it drives him nuts how anyone in IT can be titled an XYZ Engineer.
Other than state licensing, to me an engineer is someone who designs things....other than network engineers or developers, are these other titles abusing the term?
Or are "real" engineers overly sensitive?

Billions, even trillions
of people are abusing the "Engineer" title.
Everything is "Engineer" these days. That's just how it is.
If worrying about titles is someone's biggest issue in the world, I would say they have it pretty good.

I have a degree in architecture (building design and construction) and worked in the field until computers lured me away. It always bugged me when I would see job titles such as system architect or security architect. I also hate it when I see the word architect used as a verb. -

I think the best food architects are short-order cooks.

There are only a few very specific context where the title "Engineer" may be used only if the person possesses certain education and licenses. There is no legal restriction to calling yourself an Engineer outside of those contexts unless you are attempting to commit fraud. In IT, good substitute titles are "Developer" and "Operator."
What is a Professional Engineer?
