I have a Cisco Catalyst 3560 switch I am trying to connect to for the first time.  I have Putty installed.  I have a console cable.  I bought a usb-serial adapter.  I am trying to connect with the correct speed, no parity, 8 bits, etc.  I have made sure I am trying to connect via serial.  My USB adapter has the latest driver.  BUT, I am getting cannot connect to serial port error.

Have you ever connected to another cisco device with this connection before? Make sure the serial port is the same in windows device manager. Sometimes those usb to serial adapters like using com3.

I have not!  That may very well be it.  I disabled it and enabled it in Device Manager to see if that made a difference.  I’ll try COM3.  Thanks for the tip!

    If you are using Win10>>

    Windows key + R
    Type devmgmt.msc and hit enter
Expand the com ports to see what is connected to the ports

    Adjust Putty to match

Work smarter NOT harder! Semper Gumby!
