Renewing CEH worth it, and what's the easiest way?

thedudeabidesthedudeabides Member Posts: 89 ■■■□□□□□□□
I'm fairly sure I can get 40 credits for another security exam I took, and possibly 80 if I take one more before the end of the year. But none of the other stuff seems plausible. I won't be taking any more courses as I'm done with school. I'm not authoring any books or white papers, won't be writing any tools. I work in security day-to-day but that doesn't seem to be worth anything on its own.

Should I even bother renewing this cert? Not a fan of EC Council, and not sure that I'd ever need it for anything in the future. Seems like it can hold some importance for government jobs, but can't predict if one of those is in the future.

    I doubt you can find a few EC Council fans here, but do you have other certs that qualify you for government jobs?

    Also, do these government posts require that your EC Council certification be current?

    Why do you speak ill of EC Council :D ?

    As much as I hate that entity, you need to answer if you foresee using this cert for anything. I never like to cut my wings so I keep some certs active regardless of the immediate value. Having said that, none of them are EC Council. As Info_Sec_Wannabe said, I would pursue something that supersedes CEH.

    @thedudeabides

    If your in an area that has a huge government presence, I wouldn't suggest letting it go.

    If you are in Utah or something, I can see the need to let it go. It really depends on your city/state.

    Everyone talks bad about the CEH Certification....until they need it for a DoD positions and they don't have it.

    I don't believe in taking exams twice. The only time I take an exam twice is if I failed it the first time. So, any and all certifications that I have, that require renewal will be renewed. I agree with the individual above. I never know where life and opportunity and especially money will take me. If you are set in a "career" and don't see the need for it in 5-10 years let it drop. If you are a job hopper or in an entry level role or a dead end position, keep it. That's my thoughts on it.

    But..... remember this...... You Achieved the certification. You got it for a reason. What was that reason?  It's 100 bad reviews about CEH on this site and others, yet still people go and get the certification then complain about it after the fact. ..But, it's the same complaints everyone else has. The test is just about tools, The test is a joke, It was easy, the Ec-Council customer service this or that, the exam had misspelled words, the exam had errors, it was no correct answer, the people are from a foreign land, it's not a hacking exam, the exam teaches you nothing about hacking......etc etc.

    Long Story Short ->
    I would rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

    Actually you no longer need the CEH anymore if you work for the DoD. As of February last year, the CSA+ now qualifies for all of the same roles that the CEH does. It is a much better course and exam than the CEH.
    I'm not allowed to say what my previous occupation was, but let's just say it rhymes with architect.

    I was planning on tagging you on my initial reply on this post, but decided not to as you may "dislike" or flag it as inappropriate.  :D

    This maybe your best bet unless as @MrsWilliams mentioned, you may need it in the future.

    I am going to try to renew it by submitting my CCNA Cyber Ops and then Cysa+. I am still 40 ce shy--maybe they will take CCNA R&S?

    Can anyone attest to which It/security certifications they submitted for CE credits to renew their CEH?

    I just submitted ITIL Foundation. It is a super easy cert and it touches on security.... at least a little bit. ;)

    It's currently in pending status. I'll let you know if it gets rejected or not.

    Awesome please let me know. I am going to submit my CCNA Cyber Ops which I am sure will work. I wonder if they will take my M.S. from WGU for any points?

    Just do the ECES certification from EC-Council. It is very easy and you get full 120 ECEs for renewal. You can probably read the ebook in 2 days and take the exam on the 3rd day and pass.

    Oh damn, the exam is only $250? Is there any application process? Thanks for the tip.

    nope no application process. They actually have a bundle where you get your exam voucher and ebook training for $349. I recommend that to save some money and get more.

    My employer had me take and pass the Rapid 7 "insight AppSec Certified Specialist" exam.  Just to see if EC-Council would accept this, I submitted it and they accepted it for 40 CEs.  Based on that, I'm assuming they will accept any certification that's related to security.

    Confirmed 40 CEs for CCNA Cyber Ops. I will submit R&S soon...after I pass ICND2.
