questions about VLAN usage from networking student

I am a student studying networking and I am trying to understand what situations would dictate the use of a VLAN.  Is there some of you that have a real world example of using a VLAN? (or multiples?)

There are lots of reasons for wanting to use VLANs. Especially in an enterprise environment. Security purposes is a big one. Routing traffic to a specific location, like having printers on a specific VLAN send traffic over to the print servers. For device management purposes.

Tito separate your traffic and for security. I have one vlan for Data on for Voice on for Access Points and on for credit card machines. It also cut down on your broadcast domain.
