For me I would have to say, to gain the knowledge, which I hope will lead me to gaining solid experience in Cisco products and networking...

My top reasons are as follows:

1. To learn new skills, as well as expanding on some of the old ones from before. (Believe me, there's lots to learn if you study everything you need for the exam.)

2. To lay a foundation for future certs, such as CCNP, CCDA/CCDP, and help in the development of other areas such as MCSE, LPIC, CISSP, etc. . .

3. To help advance my career, help me obtain the type of work I really want to be doing, as well as earn the money I need to be able to go to school, pay my bills, and tuck some away in savings.

4. I enjoy networking, the topics are interesting and I really do like being "more than just a Windows guy", which is why I'm aiming to take the CCNA exam someday.

5. Recognition from peers, coworkers, and supervisors. The CCNA, along with most other certs, (MCSA/MCSE, SSCP, CISSP, the various CompTIA exams, etc.,) help to show the industry, and you, that you've reached a certain level of knowledge and experience in your career and your education.

I can write you what CCNA after 6 months brought to me:

1. I am working in Networking and I am still a college student
2. I have a offer to work for one of the cisco's gold partners after graduating
3. Goals to achieve - CCNP -> CCSP -> CCIE -> ...
4. Courage to apply for Cisco ASE

So my job won't be outsourced to a " low cost location" around the world.

just one reason for me.

Because employment agencies can't see that a Masters in internetworking (which covered a lot of CCNP level stuff) + 8 years of cisco experience in scoping, design, implementation and management of cisco networks qualify me to do networking jobs... If I don't have a CCNA I'm not even considered!

I took a 12 month break from work and now I appear to be unemployable without CCNA... it is getting a bit crazy here in Australia, I see 1st level support jobs that REQUIRE CCNP certification!!

But I'm getting there

it is the rote learning part that I have trouble with... all of the stuff I never had to know in order to do a real job, is the stuff I have problems with

Tell me about it, i've arrived in Oz three weeks ago, i havent been able to get an interview yet.The agencies are creating a brick wall between me and the potential employers.I'm either lacking in Cisco commercial experience or i'm over qualified! theres supposed to be a tech shortage here, but i'm not so sure,employers want everything routing,switching,security,voice, mcse etc etc its a little bit ridiculous.

Yeah! That was my only reason. The CCNA is the first milestone on the way to CCIE.

1: To expand on the Network+ certification

2: To widen scope of networking, cisco routers etc

3: To keep away from MS certs

4: Love the field of networking

5: To impress the ladies, and say bollocks to all those employers who think they know it all

1-Im starting to love networking field
2-To start my cisco career and reach the CCIE(R&S) maybe also CCIE(ISP) depends where im working.
3-Lot of money(im planning to reach CCIE level and do 100k a year at least

It means a stepping stone. One more step towards your goal.

Like if a journey to a destination is several miles away, and every mile there is a marker telling you how many more miles you have to go.

1-networking is what interest me the most.
2-to start my cisco career and hopefully get myself off help desk/desktop support.
3- become more knowledgeable and its fun for me.
4- to provide a better salary to do more for my family.
5- self achievement.

Several of the previous answers are how I felt in the begginning...

Now, the number one reason to get my CCNA is the fact that I started studying for it a long while ago. I have not yet motivated myself enough to take the exam, and I am upset with myself about that. I need to overcome my fear of failure and rise to the challenge.

I no longer want to be the only member of my companies Data Network team that does not have their CCNA.

Today I am making a promise that I will be taking my 801 CCNA within one month.
