netowrk+ - CCNA cross over?

Hi Guys,

I am just starting semester 4 of the CCNA program. I have already passed the INTRO exam and will be doing the ICND exam in early May. I am looking at doing some more certifications and have been thinking about the network+ and have a few questions.

So.......

Will my CCNA studies have any releavence to the network+ curriculum?
Is there any point in me doing both?

Any thoughts & comments are more than welcome.

Hi,

I done it the other way around, Network+ first and doing CCNA now......I would say any certs you can get then get them. If you've passed the CCNA or the majority of the curriculum and are comfortable with general networking you could probably get the N+ in a couple of weeks study.

It is very generalised in comparison to the CCNA.

The down side about the Net+ is it is very expensive (in my opinion) for what it is. I was fortunate as I can claim the ££ back from my work if I pass but if you're paying out of your own pocket it's maybe a bit different.

The NET+ is £180 (around $300) to sit in the UK.

Bottom line, is in my opinion.....All certs help, so if you can afford it then you might as well do it. If you can't then I don't think it's any biggy as CCNA is much more recognised and in demand by employers.

I'd recommend the Sybex and the Network+ Fast Pass by Bill Ferguson for this exam.

The net+ is sort of a little foundation when it comes to CCNA, pretty basic networking information if you don't have much networking experience. Typically, people do Net then onto CCNA, which is my route currently but you could add it, another cert listed doesn't hurt. If you watch for prices and get a voucher that expires in a short amount of time then you can save a lot on the price of the exam.

I would say just focus on CCNA and as soon as that's done move on to some specialist or professional certs. As a guy who has done net+, and as a hiring manager, I only recommend net+ as a starting point for help desk/pc tech types before they start working on MS certs. If you are on a Cisco track, then do your CCNA.

The Network+ overlaps a lot with the INTRO material, and then adds the server/network OS stuff to that. You should be able to grab a book and knock it out pretty easily.

You could do it as a "study break" while you finish up CCNA 4 and use it as a warm up to the CCNA exam.

CCNA expires after 3 years if you don't keep it up. Network+ is life time.

I have decided to give network+ a miss and try for security plus instead.

IMHO, absolutley no point to getting the NET+ if you're already halfway through your CCNA. Would only recommend it as a precursor to the CCNA
