Dead CD-RW ??

I was/am doing some work on a machine for my friend. I had completed reinstalling the OS (XP pro). Installed one program, (wordperfect 10). when I went to install Norton internet security, I discovered that the cd rw that I was using to perform the above installs was not reading the cd. I tried many other cd's, no luck. I tried the drive in a couple of other machines and nothing.

Any ideas.....Anyone?

BTW. Sony CRX175A 24x/10x/40x

    If you've tried different Cds, with no success, and the drive worked shortly before, check the device manager and/or properties of the drive. If you can, try another CD-rom drive too see if that will work. If it does, then it the old drive just failed on you. Not a good thing, unless it's under warranty.

    It turned out that the drive was pooched. No warranty.
