OSI Layer Question

On what layer do we find a modem?

The Cisco Press test, places it on Layer 1. But I would think, Layer 2.

Layer 1 argument - it handles converstion of data on the physical medium
Layer 2 argument - A modem has a MAC address

Same argument as NIC. yet the same software shows the NIC as being Layer 2.

Where did you find documentation to support this? I've been working with dozens of different types of modems for many years, I've never come across one that had a MAC Address.

In dial-up networking, your phone connection is assigned a virtual MAC address by the OS. Hope this helps.

actually, what you said really clarfied what I was reading. I got the imrpession that you needed a Mac address to establish a PPP connection, but rather it create an address.
