GUYS I need help setting up my lab, i have 1 2514 and 1 2501 cisco router and 1 1900 switch ok here is my question

i have connected the switchs e0/1 to my pc and using subnet 192.168.10.64
have given my pc .66 and switch .65 which makes my subnet 255.255.255.192 ok now

1) how will i connect the switch to the router which interface should i use?

2)say i connected the router to the switch using e0/2 what ip address should i use? different subnet to the e0/1 or different subnet and where do i configure that in the router's e0 or the switch.

Do you want to set up trunking? Or just basic connectivity? Assuming you want just basic connectivity - set the router's ethernet address to another IP on the same subnet. Use a straight-through ethernet cable for the uplink.

Any of the other ethernet interfaces on the switch are fine. You don't put an IP on a standard layer 2 switch interface. Create a vlan1 interface on the switch and assign it your IP address. (Only 1 IP for the entire switch) Set the default-gateway on the switch to the ethernet interface IP on the router. Also, set the default gateway on your PC to the router ethernet IP.

I am kind of a networking newb, but from what I have learned, don't go overboard on memorizing the commands for the 1900 series switch. They are not on the test, or used in production anymore. (Hence the $40 price tag on them)

That is not to say there isn't some concepts you can still learn, but I wasted a lot on my 1900 series, and the commands are different on the 2950 switches. 2950 are what is on the test, as well as what you might see in a production environment.

thanks guys i will try this when get home today.

to be clear i assign ip to e0 of the router which is connceted to the switch, using the same subnet i will assig ip address to the pc.

so what do i need to configure the switch?

You don't "need" to configure the switch with an IP address or very much at all to work to be honest.

If you want to be able to telnet to the switch for remote management you need to assign an IP address to VLAN 1 and if you want to telnet to it from a different router/subnet than the switch is directly connected to, you would also need to assign a default gateway (router ethernet interface address)

Switch ports by default are in VLAN 1 at least on 2950 series switches. On a 1900 you might have to assign the switch ports to the vlan. You only assign the VLAN an IP for administrative purposes.
So basically its like this.
You set your pc's to the proper IP addresses.
You assign the router interface an IP address.
You connect your cables to the switch and you should have connectivity.
I am not well versed with the 1900 series as far as assigning the switch ports to VLAN's but on the 2950 all the ports are by default in vlan 1.

one Question to connect the router 2500 directly to my pc i know there is options one is through the consol and the other is through the ethernet which i belive is the aui on the router using ethernet transceiver ok

i have done so and i can't make it work, im suspecting that ethernet transceiver is faulty b4 i go and buy another one can someone please explain how this connection should be and what i need to configure both on the router and pc, basically i connected the transciver to the router and using RJ45 I connected it to the pc's nic card, and the link light on the transciver is still off

I think you're getting confused here......are you trying to configure the router, or get a host to talk to it on the network?

To get the PC to work on the same network as the ethernet port you need to connect a crossover RJ45 cable, assign the PC a static IP address on the same subnet as the router interface.

If you don't understand what I mean I think you should do a bit more reading to understand the concepts of what you're trying to do.

sould be as follows though (only ecxample ip addresses)

Router ethernet port - 192.5.5.1 255.255.255.0

PC
IP address 192.5.5.10 (can be 2 - 254)
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.5.5.1

As mentioned before the only way you need to assign an IP address to the switch is if you require to manage it remotely (telnet). Again if you don't understand this then you need to get into the theory work for the fundamentals and basic router config.

i though if im using the ethernet transciever to connect to the router that i didn't need the cross over cable, am i wrong? because my router has AUI interface.

Are you referring to one of these?

If so, you just need to plug that into your Ethernet AUI port & then a crossover cable from the host to the transceiver. You always need to use a crossover cable when connecting a host directly to a router, regardless of a transceiver or not.
