Routing Groups vs Static Routes

I seem to be a little confused on the topic of routing groups. I undersand the concept of routing groups, but what if you don't actually have the routes in your routing table to the other servers? Does the routing group define these for you or is it a 2 part process where your're member of the routing group and you have the physical route to the pc?

    Routing groups are logical, not physical paths. It basically says, a message is allowed to go here to get to here. It will then use physical routing such as RIP/OSPF/BGP/IGRP/etc. This is why in Exchange 2007, routing groups are no more and it uses the logical paths built-in to Active Directory Sites and Services.
