WS-C2924-XL-A??

Just a quick one, is a WS-C2924-XL-A a good switch for the CCNA? I keep getting confused by the different models in 2900 series.

I have a 2924XL from cisco kits already and the plan is to get another and a 2950.

Yeah man, so long as it's an XL series you're fine. A pair of 2900s and a 2950 is fine for the CCNA.

Any who, XL-A model switches are non enterprise class switches that were released back in the day.

Although it does not matter now due to Cisco merging the enterprise services features into a
standard image for 2900XL series and 3500XL series switches..

You can get the latest IOS free with a CCO account from cisco's website listed below;
http://tools.cisco.com/support/downloads/pub/MDFTree.x?butype=switches

That latest version; c2900xl-c3h2s-tar.120-5.WC17.tar Will include enterprise
services and cluster management just as the XL-EN and is designed to run on XL-A

Just for you guys information, not all 2900XL switches can be upgraded to version 12 of IOS.

From Cisco's website:

The 4-MB Catalyst 2900 XL switches do not have sufficient memory to be upgraded to this release. The 4-MB models are WS-C2908-XL, WS-C2916M-XL, WS-C2924C-XL, and WS-C2924-XL. These switches must run Release 11.2(8.x)SA6 to be cluster members.

Please keep this in mind if you're in the market for a cheap switch. You don't want to spend $75-$100 on a switch that doesn't have enough memory to upgrade from 11.x.

Ty for the update, although I've not used a 2900XL switch since like 29 months ago lol...

The 2950 is used for ccna, but if you look on ebay you can buy a 3524XL cheeper
then the 2950 and it does everything the 2950 does and more. The 3500XL commands
are actually closer to the 3550 commands then that of its predecessor.

The 2950 is used for the CCNA, but with 12.x IOS the 2900 is "close enough" to be a good secondary switch for the lab environment. I always recommend that people get at least one 2950, but they're expensive so buying out of production but "close enough" equipment is a great option for adding to a lab.

Thanks a lot for the tip regarding the 3524xl platform, I never even thought about that!

i purchased 3 of these recently, now i'm thinking that they're not going to work out as i planned? (i bought that one, an dthen he offered me two more cheap so i was like fine...). I'm more than likely going to have a 2950 soon though, but what 2900xl models can be upgraded?
