Passed 70-291 by the skin of my teeth (score 760) this morning and now very releaved as i have a training course on MS Exchange 2003 next week followed by the relevent exam a couple of weeks later. It was my first attempt so i wanted to say thanks for all your advise, tips and comments as it gave me a good idea of what to expect and which areas to concentrate on more so.

My comments for guys taking the test:

To prepare for the 70-291 exam i signed up to the MS training course at my local prometric centre. I also used the CBT Nuggests & TestOut training videos and plenty of test questions. I found the actual week long prometric course very helpfull but didnt touch on WSUS at all. Personally i wouldnt have paid the £600 for the course (my employer paid for it:). Also while the cbt nuggets video training cds are excellent they go in quite deeply and is probably more than you need to know for the exam. Again the TestOut training video cds didnt really cover WSUS much, concidering i had roughly 10 out of 46 WSUS related questions in my exam, but covered the areas enough to feel comfortable with the exam questions. As there is so much to learn for this exam i feel the TestOut cds were probably the better of the 3 training matrial i used.

So far ive passed 70-270, 70-290, 70-291 and will hopefully get the Exchange 2k3 next month. One thing that worrys me... now with 2007 server on the scene how useful is 2003 mcse going to be. Also, how long do i have to get my 2k3 mcse before the exams are replaced by the 2007 equivalents? Will there be a quickroute to a mcse 2007 for 2003 mcse certified people or will they need to do all the 2007 exams like everyone else?
next up SharePoint... what's that all about!

    Congratulations and welcome on board!

To answer your question: there won't be an MCSE 2007. Microsoft introduced their "new generation of certs" some time ago. Likely, there will be multiple MCTS(Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist) exams for different Windows Server technologies, and several MCITP (Microsoft Certified IT Professional) certs. The MCTS require one or more exams, the MCITP requires one or more MTCS certs and one or more additional exams. For example:

MCTS: Windows 2007 Server, Configure (Like the 70-620 Vista exam)
    MCTS: Windows 2007 Server, ADS
    MCTS: Windows 2007 Server, Networking
    MCTS: Windows 2007 Server, Security
MCTS: Windows 2007 Server, Messaging (i.e. Installing Exchange exam)

    and for example:

MCITP: Windows 2007, Enterprise (requires MCTS configure, MCTS Networking, MCTS ADS) + one or more additional exams (more theoretic like the current design exams)

MCITP: Windows 2007, Messaging (requires MCTS configure, MCTS ADS, MCTS messaging) +
    Exchange design exam.

    Etc.etc.

So instead of having one MCP and MCSE, you can have multiple different MCTS certs, and multiple different MCITP certs for different technologies.

(again, the above are just examples to illustrate the structure.)

So the MCSE is being laid to rest? icon_cry.gif

The MCSE has had quite a history.

Will they allow MCSE:2003's to upgrade to MCITP?

Well at least Microsoft might be cutting back on the #of exams to obtain professional status.

    Yes, and yes.

I just checked and there's something in the MCP member area on the MS site. A little less than the ones I made up, but I wasn't that far of and the structure matches:

    - MCTS: Windows Server "Longhorn" Active Directory Configuration
    - MCTS: Windows Server "Longhorn" Networking Infrastructure Configuration
    - MCTS: Windows Server "Longhorn" Application Platform Configuration

There will be two Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) credentials, which will require two or three MCTS pre-requisites:
    - MCITP: Server Administrator (three or four exams total)
    - MCITP: Enterprise Administrator (five exams total)

    Upgrade exams:
    - MCSA on Windows Server 2003 can upgrade to two MCTS certifications (Active Directory and Networking) with one exam.
    - MCSE on Windows Server 2003 can upgrade to all three MCTS certifications with one exam.

There will not be a separate upgrade path for customers who hold a Messaging or Security specialization in Windows Server 2003. There will not be an upgrade path from Windows Server 2000 certifications.

The upgrade exams will be introduced (for a beta period) at Tech·Ed 2007 in the first week of June 2007; the live exams will be available approximately two months after the beta period finishes.

Also note that the MCTS Exchange is already available. Security will be an integrated part of the Windows Longhorn exams.

No it's not yet anywhere here on the site except for in this topic. The above is based on some preliminary info from the MCP-only section at Microsoft.com. They will make a public announcement in June. If you are currently working on the MCSA/E 2003 track, you should continue it and ignore these new certs for now.

    cheers guys

i plan to have my mcsa by the end of next month (70-284 and an elective to take) and my 2k3 mcse within in the next 3 or 4 months providing the 2k3 exams are still around to take? its a shame i will have, hopefully, achieved my mcse just as its replaced by the new ms 2007 certs. although an msce would mean a quick route to mcts.

also thanks to Johan for clearing that, once again this forum has proved to be very knowledgeable and helpful yet again ;)

What surprises me regarding the Server 2008 upgrade process is the fact that you can only upgrade to the MCTS certifications. So all in all, there are 5 exams for the Server 2008 series; and with the upgrade process from MCSE, you only have 1 less exam to do if you plan on achieving all Server 2008 certifications.
