CCIE book recommendations.

So while attempting CCNP, i decided to order some CCIE books just to go through on a free weekend, i know some of you guys read a lot, any recommendations?

Here's my own personal must list:

Routing TCP/IP volume I by Doyle et al
Routing TCP/IP volume II by Doyle et al
Internet routing architectures Halabi
Qos Exam certification guide (CCIE reading list reccomends a diff one, but I prefer this one)
CCIE written Exam certification guide (really good overview)
The CCNP Cisco press Library

I havent found a very good multicast book as yet, as I think the Cisco press "developing IP multicast networks" is utter Tat, and dated (8 years dated)

Im sure Darby can point to some good sources,
for this I used the cisco whitepapers

Thanks a lot gentlemen, i just bough Routing TCP/IP Vol I & II by Doyle from Amazon, i should get it within a couple of weeks, i'll get the rest later.

I would say that the recommended reading list for the CCIE path, (I'm assuming you mean Routing & Switching,) would be a good place to start. Each CCIE path has a set of recommended books to take a look at, listed on the site for each respective path.

Why on a free weekend?
use it as while you attempt to study for your CCNP... it will give you a better understanding of it...
AT least i use CCIE books for my CCNP studies
I use my normal CCNP study guides and also i always check and read with those books... bealive me you will learn a lot by doing it that way.
Dont you think thats a good way to go Darby?

Lammle is good for ccna, after that his books are pretty worthless.

It doesn't look like Lammle's written anything for the new CCNP exams, anyway. Incidentally, my 'reward to myself', once I pass the CCNA is going to be Routing TCP/IP, Volume 1 (2nd Edition). I intend to go for the CCNP at some point, probably after my trek back into Microsoft-land, but I figured that reading some of the books on the CCIE reading list in my spare time wouldn't hurt. I definitely agree with NightShade1's comment that the reading-list books will be very helpful in those pro-level exams, since they don't just fall inside the parameters of the tests, they cover a more 'general', and complete range of topics.

Don't forget your arsenal of books that don't 'teach the test'

Try the CCIE Study Guide by Roosevelt Giles as an example. You should be able to pick that up for a good price as a used book an amazon. If the level of detail in that book floats your boat I can recommend a few more like that. My shelf is full of texts like these, well thumbed and falling to bits. Stallings, Stevens, Perlman, Kwok to name just a few..

It has errors but so do dummies guides and it doesn't teach the test. Nevertheless there's a lot of good stuff in there. These are the sorts of books we looked at back in the day before a gadzillion spoon fed training resources came out. Heavy going. But no heavier than reading an RFC.

A lot of people hated it, but I guess they didn't understand. It's a very detailed, timeconsuming read that never killed anyone! But then for some folks there is a choice of more TV to watch and more food to eat..or..having to sit down and engage with tough books that will take up their whole evening.

It's a big ask for some people.

Networking study is a very long term thing.

Time spent with difficult reading materials can pay off!

Caslow is forgotten by a lot of candidates these days. Buy it. It's still good. Doyle of course, Parkhurst, Halibi, Beau's book on Multicast and more..

Lammle had a decent CCIE Written Study Guide 6 years ago...never updated it.

Welll also fallowing your advises in the other topic of this... i just bough through internet CCNP for practical studies routing... to start doing practicse of everything(Well i actually did practice but i made lab myself to do it, now ill have a guide for it) Practiced on dynamips and ill access also a RACK to practice not just with dynamips and with real routers.
Hope my book reach soon... i wanna start practicing from it.
