The purpose of having a Home Folder using local path?

Can somebody please tell me what is the use of having a home folder using the local path in the profile tab in the account properties?
You can't save any user files with the local path.

We use it for when users need a backup of a file...we'll place the backup in there so we dont overrwrite anything that might still be of use. Also when someone scans the jpegs are saved there. Users can save whatever they want as well.
What do you mean you can't save any user files?Working on Linux+ -

What do you mean you can't save any user files?
Local Path doesn't accept UNC pathing (E.g. \\DC1\Documents).
If you are on a network, the local path option is not helpful.
