Hardware setup

Ok i have 2-2611 routers that im using for my lab.
my other 3-2501's are on hold until i upgrade them.

but i was reading the techlab about hardware on the forums, and it uses an adapter v.35 male and female, to hook the routers to each other.

my question is , why could i just use a serial to serial connection, instead of serial to v.35 male to v.35 feamle back to serial.. would a serial to serial cable be easier.

also i tryin to ping my 2611 router. How exatly do i need to set it up to my comp for it to ping it.

do i use the ethernet port of the router and connect it to my NIC card. Or how???

also how would i hook up 2 of them, so i could ping both

Deez, don't take this the wrong way but I think it's way to early for you to be using your lab if you still have questions like the ones above. Have you read through your entire book yet? It just sounds like your jumping ahead of yourself and that really wont do you any good.

In regards to the serial though you don't need male to female. They have serial crossover cables that keep it simple.

No not at all, i wont take advice in a wrong way.

But your right, i am kinda using it early, idk, its like i have it and i want to use it but i cant lol... im just jumping around i guess. I like to be active so i guess thats the problem.

to tell you the the truth, i just starting chpt 3- subnetting, and VLSM, so after this chapter then the hands-on lab comes in ( Cisco IOS ... Chpt 4) but that wont be in a long time, cuase im read this chapter at least 10 times or more or until i have subnettting down pack, and i can do it like that in a snap in my head.

You might want to page ahead in your books to get an idea for what you will be doing (and learning) and to make sure you have all the cables and transceivers ready for when you need them....

One of things that should be covered somewhere in the INTRO material is the Male-Female V.35 cables back to back -- with one of them being the DCE cable. But for a home lab it is easier (and less messy and probably cheaper) to just buy the back-to-back cables from eBay. Either way one end will be "DCE".... and that's the side you have to set the clock rate on in your lab.

It's the end of the INTRO material where you get to finally touch a router. Or look at it this way -- after you've survived the TCP/IP stuff and subnetting, then you'll get your "router learner's permit"

i have a dumb question, please answer in a sincere way.

im trying to get into global configuration mode i enter in hyper terminal config terminal
but this is what it says every time

basically i want to change the host name, but why does it said invalid input.. am i entering it wrong

NOTE:****** when i copied and pasted what the hyper terminal said, the ^ marker is at the F of config

all i have connected is my console cable to my com port, and the other end to the console port. thats it.

Have you consoled in to your routers yet? If not, that would be a good start to have a look around. WHen you can do that you can start a little bit of configuration. click start, run, type hypertrm to execute hyperterminal and setup the terminal settings like baud and parity.

Like other's said, You need some V.35 crossover cables that are DTE on one side and DCE on the other. This will connect your routers via thier serial ports. I would hold off on that untill you can get a P.C connected to that fastethernet interface.

If I were you I would console in with a roll-over cable and configure your FastEthernet0/0 port on that 2611 for a class C ip with a class C default subnet mask. Like 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 and enable the interface.

interface FastEthernet0/0
ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
no shut

Then go to your LAN properties on your p.c and give it a static IP of 192.168.1.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0, a default gateway of 192.168.1.1. Click start, run , type CMD <enter> and do an ipconfig to check your IP.

Connect the P.C to the ethernet interface of the router with a crossover cable and the light should light up. you should be able to ping the ip of the router's ethernet interface. This is your default gateway.
ping 192.168.1.1 from the command prompt. You should also be able to ping 192.168.1.2 from the router.

Driver's ed for routers.....

(config)# global configuration mode

type enable at the > prompt to get into enable mode
Then you can enter global config

Sounds like a job for password recovery!

And you can't do that on Boson NetSim!

Did you try hitting return or cisco?

So many 2600 password recovery choices over at Cisco.com...... how about this one

im using hyper terminal, not boson.

but umm no i havent tried those we will see what happens.

You caught me editing..... I finally selected and put in a link I hadn't used before.

Password recovery was a Cisco CCNA Network Academy Lab.... and you can't do it on Boson. In real life its fun to give a CCNA who used a simulator a real password recovery to do.

Here is the Mother of All Cisco Password Recovery Links.... which is good to know. But stick with that link I was editing into my previous post (oh, which isn't a specific 2600 sample... but I like the "clean page" look).

Yeah, but password recovery is easy as pie. The steps in that link should prove helpful.

When I took the cisco academy class several years ago I screwed up and erased the flash on one of the routers. Definately do *not* do this.

ok im following the steps to reset my other 2611, but it aint working so well.

it says to go to rommon mode, and type confreg 0x2142
i did that, and i type reset, and skip the inital configuration, then the steps says to go to enable mode.
so i type enable, and the router# appears, then the steps says to type configure memory, or copy startup-config running-config. I tried both of those and when i do the garbage symbols reappear.

LOOK

Router#copy startup-config running-config
Destination filename [running-config]?

you see i typed copy startup-config running-config and once it said destination filename i clicked enter, and enter again, and the garbage symbols appear.

can anyone explain why.

Can you tell me what are you trying to do?, if you want to change the config-reg to the router this's how to do it:

router>enable 
router#conf t 
router(config)#config-register 0x2102 
router(config)#exit 
router#reload

im resetting the passwords, and im following the link mike gave me ( posted above)

but once i get to the step to copy NVRAM to memory (configure memory) the crazy character come up

Maybe that's the hostname

Rather than copying the startup-config over the running-config, do a show startup-config and see what's in there first.

If you get "trash" -- then the startup-config is probably corrupt -- so stop using it and create a new running-config and save it as the startup-config.

ok my computer IP address is 192.168.0.13 ( i used ipconfig in DOS command prmpt)

i want to be able to ping my router, and my router ping me.

how do i go about doing this. The reason i want to ping becuase, i want to make a backup copy of my ios to a TFTP server.

You have two choices...
1. As you said, you can hook up a crossover cable from your NIC to the router's ethernet interface and give it a 192.168.0.x address, depending on the subnet mask of your NIC.

2. If you a switch with basic config, you can hook both your NIC and the router's ethernet interface to the switch using straight-through cables, you'd still need to change the router's address to match that of your NIC.

Make sure you issue a 'no shut' after you change the address on the router's interface...

i tried setting my comp address with 192.168.0.33 255.255.255.224
and my router with 192.168.0.60 255.255.255.255.224

since the valid host of the subnet mask is 33-64 (subnet /27)

but no luck

when i type show interface was does line protocol down mean

the ethernet is up but the line is down?

is there anything i did wrong

That mean layer 1 problems, check the cables, connections and try it again.

hmmm. hopefully th thateyll cover this in my book, and have a hands on lab for it. so when i get to part i know what im doing lol

I'm not sure, but check the line speed...your NIC maybe at 100mb full and the router maybe at 10mb??

Is the router interface a fastethernet or just ethernet?? Maybe incompatible line speeds or modes...half vs full, etc

Just some thoughts...
