another subnetting question

hi all,

if i have an ip address of 192.168.10.1 /28

i know that i have 14 usable subnets and 14 usable hosts. So my first subnet will be 16 and first
useable host will be .17 and my last host will be .30.

The thing i need to know is what address will be used as the default gateway on my PC.

wil it be the 192.168.10.17 address???? which is the first usable host.

Any help would be appreciated thanks

Hi, the ip addresses are free to choose to designate in a range, only thing You have to do is not duplicate them in the network, then the default gateway can be .17 to .30 calmly.

This has me a bit confused...wouldn't 192.168.10.0 be the first subnet and 192.168.10.1 be the first useable host?

I thought the IP address 192.168.10.1/28 would fall in the 192.168.10.0 subnet??

Therefore, since 10.1 is in use, any host address from 10.2 to 10.14 can be used as the default gateway???

Hopefully someone can clarify...

Hodgey You are not wrong...i think you ment to say 192.168.10.0/28

I believe you are both correct. I just depends on if you are subnetting using the traditional method , or the ip subnet-zero method in which case the first subnet would be the 192.168.10.0

So you can use any subnet, you don't have to start with the first subnet if you don't want to.

You can assign the router and NIC an IP from 192.168.10.0 OR 192.168.10.16 OR 32 or 48

Only time you have to be careful about which subnets go where is when implementing VLSM.

I supposed 192.168.10.1 /28 was only for refernce and he discarded the (ill-famed) zero subnet, then I have answered based only on the second part of the question.
