don't get a 1900 switch. It's a waste. If you can save up some money and buy a 2950. Or if it's out of your price range try a 2924.

no don't get that. you will be wasting your time and money with those 1900 series switches. The 1900 switches have a different command set and syntax than the 2900. The CCNA uses the 2900 command set. You can buy those same routers and 2924 switches off of ebay for the same price. All that about having everything you need to pass the test is a SCAM. They are just saying that so you will buy obsolete gear. They don't have anything else to do with it besides pawn it off on some unknowing chap.

Thank you.. Are these routers appropriate or do you suggest a better version. is 16MB enough for the flash and the DRAM? And which IOS?

These routers aren't bad. you may want to try and look on ebay for a 2600 router and buy a WIC 1T card to install in the empty slot. If you have the money go for a 2620 which has a fast ethernet port instead of the 10mbps that i have. Try and get the latest IOS yourself. usually Cisco will let you download it if it's end of model. All depends. 16MB should be enough for flash. For me i had mine come with 8mb flash and 32 DRAM. I had to upgrade both just to updated the latest IOS.

Buying equipment is a good move. It will get costly and cause a headache. But i'll tell you the hands on experiace is worth the price. I was on the fence about getting a Sim or equipment. Now i'm a hundred percent convinced it's important to get equipment. I know people say a sim is good enough to "pass the test" You don't want to pass the test. you want to be able to demostrate you can do this stuff hands on especially if you are looking to get a new job after you get your cert. At least that's how it is in my case.

I totally agree, I am already in the field yet I do not have hands on with Cisco Equipment. I dont want to get the cert and have never touched the equipment. I appreciate your replies, I feel retarded asking these questions, but these so many answers from the general FAQ I wanted to make sure the specifics

WHat are your plans for the future? Do you plan on getting CCNA and quitting the Cisco track???
If thast the case then yes those routers will probably suffice as long as you can grasp the concepts. Probably won't be able to do much with VLANS or frame-relay, but I could be wrong on that. If you plan on going the distance, going for speed, or racing and pacing then I would suggest getting modular devices that are scalable for future certs.

Another thing that is great about buying or searching for equipment is you learn about all the difference series routers that cisco has. I started like you asking a similar question to one of the members here. He pointed me in the right direction. I went from knowing nothing about router and switching models t having a very good idea of what is what and some of the featuers it has.

What i currently have is 2521(frame relay clout) 2509 Terminal server, 2 2610's and for switches i have a 2950(expensive but you need it) and 2 2924's. I know it's a bit over kill but i'll probably need some of this stuff when i move into CCNP and beyond.

Another thing is try to hook it up to your current internet connection at home. I plan on doing this soon once i have everything upgrade(waiting on some addtional memory in the mail). its' great to setup the lab internally but after a while it gets boring pinging 1 end to another.

Hook it up to your ISP and practice NAT/PAT. Try using ACL's and block ports to www and see if you can get to the internet. look at all the errors that come in/outbound.

I really appreciate the responses. It definately cleared up alot of this confusion and hopefully I will be able to pay it forward sometime.

I am aiming for the CCNA, Im not trying to look past it yet, but im sure once i get it i'll want my CCNP
