Boot Orders for 9x, 2k, and XP
charwell
HELLO ALL!
During the last few weeks of my exam prep for A+ I have come across many different representations of boot orders, yet none ever have the clairification of which OS they are associated with. The YMCA acronym is great, but which OS? I already know that boot.ini is only 2000/NT/XP.
IO/sys, MSDOS.sys, Config.sys, Command.com, Autoexec represents which OS? But I'm guessing comptia isn't that easy. So which does the following represent?:
POST, BIOS, Ntldr, ntdetect, win.ini
Does anybody have a great website that defines all the possible boot processes?

Forum lookers, I have answered my own question, and hope it will help you all. Please respond with any comments and corrections. This is my method of studying, which means I'm hoping for corrections and/or clarifications...
The DOS boot sequence:
POST, BIOS executes the MBR, IO.sys, MSDOS.sys, Config.sys, Command.com, Autoexec.bat
The Win 9x & Me boot sequence (Remember boot.ini doesn't exist on 9x):
POST
BIOS executes the MBR, which loads IO.sys
IO.sys
MSDOS.sys
Config.sys (executed by IO.sys to see if any real mode drivers exist)
Command.com
Autoexec.bat
winstart.bat
win.com
The NT/2000/XP boot sequence:
POST
BIOS executes the MBR, which loads NTLDR
NTLDR
Boot.ini
(Bootsect.dos if running dual harddrives)
NTDETECT
NTOSKERNL
