VLAN's with Switches

Ok, correct me if I'm wrong:
A switch will controll a collision domain, by insuring that all data inteaded for a certain node, get's to just that node (By mac address)
A switch will controll a broadcast domain, but only while operating as a VLAN. It does this by seperating the domain, into different subnets (Like different segments almost) Thus, not alowing a broadcast from subnet 1 to get to subnet 2.
Am I correct? I'm just making sure I have a good understanding.
