I am having some problems with a Windows Vista on my Network

nice343nice343 Member Posts: 391
This windows Vista PC can ping and access files from any PC on the network and can even telnet into my routers and switches but I cannot ping this PC from other computers and routers.

I checked the Vista firewall and everything still cannot ping!!

I find if funny that I can ping one way but cannot ping the other way round.

Whats going on ???

So Vista can transmit an echo request but not an echo reply? Make sure you have each of these ICMP subcomponents enabled in the firewall. Double check that "allow incoming echo request" is on.
There is no place like 127.0.0.1 BUT 209.62.5.3 is my 127.0.0.1 away from 127.0.0.1!

As a quick test, try turning Vista's firewall off and see if the problem goes away. If it does, change the firewall configuration as needed.

Is this a wireless network? A good place to start troubleshooting network connectivity on the Vista machine is Start | Control Panel | Network and Sharing Center.

I would definitely test it without the Vista firewall first as was suggested.

If you are trying to access the Vista PC from an XP machine you may want to try downloading the patch at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en. I could not acccess files on my Vista laptop through my home network even after having SP2 and all of the latest updates until installing that patch seperately. Once I had them in the same workgroup and enabled file sharing I could access the XP desktop from my Vista laptop, but not the other way around until installing that patch.

What version of IOS are your routers running?

Windows Vista has TCP Window scaling enabled by default and this is not supported on any IOS earlier then 12.3(15) as well as PIX 6.1(5), 6.2(3) and 6.3(1).

    Their's a command you can use to turn off TCP windowing on Vista which is;

    start > run > cmd
"netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable"

This would be my first guess :)

    yes and no.

When I set the vista machine to connect to the network through wireless, I can ping it and access files on it. When I disable wireless and enable the ethernet adapter I can ping other hosts but other hosts can ping the vista machine

Mental note to self #1: When someone says "and everything", don't assume they really did check "everything". :P

Mental note to self #2: Add "third party firewalls" to trouble shooting check list for connectivity issues.

Seriously, this was a good lesson for all of us. Thanks for letting us know what the issue was. :)
