IGMP Snooping, Layer 3 or not.

rakemrakem Member Posts: 800
I have read conflicting things regarding IGMP snooping.

Some books say that only layer 3 switches can use IGMP snooping, others say that it can run on a normal layer 2 switch.....

so whats the correct statement?

    I guess that answers that question! :D
    I usually hang out on 224.0.0.10 (FF02::A) and 224.0.0.5 (FF02::5) when I'm in a non-proprietary mood.

    The answer now is L2 and L3 switches, but a few years back, IGMP snooping was not available on the L2 platforms because the ASICs couldn't deal with anything beyond the L2 header. Depending on how old the resource is, the information may have been accurate when it was written.
