This is depressing...

I've been picking up pieces of equipment over the past few years. Family illnesses and other things have continually kept me from actually pursuing my CCNA. I'll have my MCSE in a few months, and will finally be ready to attack the CCNA. When I purchased the equipment, I wasn't aware of the importance of the memory and IOS versions. Now that I'm looking through this, I appear to be in kind of bad shape. My question is, how bad is this, and how much will this limit my studies?

I'm just going off memory, and that could be shoddy at the moment cuz i'm hungry...

But I think I can remember the guys recommending 16/16 for the 2500s, so you look in ok shape there...

The 2950 seems ok as well, but I'm not too familiar with the 2613...

I'm sure Matt will drop you a line on this one...

Your 2950 should be fine, you may want to upgrade it to an IOS version that supports PVRST, but it should be ok. As far as the others go, the 2501 is maxed out on memory and ram, you may want to upgrade it to an IOS that supports IPv6. One of the 2520's has 8MB of ram and should be upgraded, if you are going to use the 2511 as a terminal server only you could swap the memory to the 2520, also you would want to upgrade the IOS. THe other 2520 looks fine, just an IOS upgrade if you wanted. You're going to want the 2613 at 64MB ram and 16MB flash to load a suitable IOS image, but it only has token ring interfaces on it for LAN so you may want to get a NM-1FE-TX for it, also good for inter-VLAN routing.

All in all you need about $150 in parts and your're good, if you don't buy the N, then it will be like $50.

The proper way is to get a $upport contract from Ci$co, but you may know someone who can get it for you.

Looks good man! For the CCNA your IOS versions are going to be fine. If there is anything that doesn't work, it will be very trivial, I am sure.

The 2950 looks great just as durant said, since this is a WS-2950-12, this model will only support the Standard Image, this is a physical limitation of the switch. Dont get too confused with the image though, its the same ios for both EI and SI. Depending on the model of the switch determines if additional features are utilized in the image. You can download the latest IOS for your 2950 with a guest level cisco cco account. The link is in my IOS Guide.

As for the 2500's I see a few oldies there, especially with the 5.2(8a) Bootstrap
That one is definately a collectors item

All 2500's will require 16F/16D (most of your routers have this except your 2520, which has 8MB RAM)

As for the IOS to use for your studies, this is dependant on what your studying. Such as OSPFv3
on a 2500 would require 12.2(15)T17 (man its amazing how i remember such useless stuff) You can google cisco's feature navigator to search for what features are included in what IOS images.

You will definately want 64D/16F on your 2613 router so you can perform router on a stick. Their is a few 12.2 images that will support dot1q trunking that will run on 8/32 but you'll have to look those up on cisco navigator. I beleive they are technology train images though, example being 12.2(15)T or somthing along those lines.

You will need at least one more switch to do STP, perferably 2 more (can be 2900XL or 2950's) But I wouldnt worry about the XL series that much, it has been killed off pretty much. But if your budget isnt all that good then 2900XL can be pretty good
