Got a 960 on the 802...

MAN THAT WAS A HARD TEST!!!!!

I don't think they are really focusing hard on the new topics, but the test was still really hard.

THE SIMS kick my tail!!!

Anyway I am done and now it is time to Chill..

I'm taking the test soon and I was wondering how long it took you to prepare for the exam. I have some experience and a little knowledge but I'm starting at the beginning still and am unsure how long I should study before taking the test. I scheduled it but am unsure if I will be ready by then and am thinking about rescheduling it to get more study time in. About how much time did you spend studying?

Well I studied for this exam for a LONG time.

I started years ago.... Studied for a few months, and then put it away (because work led me in different directions). Then I would pick it back up and repeat the process....

Now this did give me a lot of networking knowledge, but no cert.

So I finally decided to just get it over with....

This last run lasted me around 2 and 1/2 months.

If its your first run, I would bet you could do it start to finish in 4 to 6 months....

Now cisco used to call this an entry level cert. I have to disagree, this is an advanced cert.

If you get your CCNA you will know a good deal about networking.

Does CCNA = Network engineer? No, but it is a GREAT first step.

FYI, don't wait too long before either continuing to read up or advance; I've been pursuing another certification since I passed mine, and after going back in recently to review, discovered to my unpleasant surprise just how much has suddenly become rusty.

Agree with you on all points. I had obtained the old 640-507 back in 2000, which was a lot easier then the 640-801. Especially the switch configurations and commands had changed a lot. I have been working with 2600 series routers and 2900 catalysts for the last 7 years off and on and then finally decided to recertify and beat the Nov. 6 deadline.

Agree with the value of the Cisco Press books in the preparation, there are many little details that the Lammle books omit, even though they are very good preparation materials. It helps to have real equipment available, as simulators only go so far. Plus you learn a lot about the hardware and the cabling connections.

The CCNA is quite challenging and requires extensive networking experience. What has helped me a great deal has been my work with Linux and Windows Servers incl. IDS and firewalls. Plus the whole IP stuff is much easier to graps with a lot of hands on experience.

Having passed the CCNA on the first try both times has motivated me to continue and go for the BSCI next. What I really like about Cisco is that it is all about networking and traffic, plus having grown up with DOS and UNIX, I really like command languages. But the CNA and SDM are the wave of the future, time to get used to them.

Several days I just didn't know what to do with my self...

So I started looking for resources for my next exam... How sick is that?

If you think that is sick...the day I passed, I came home and posted my score and I was online looking for BSCI resources....

The sad irony now is that I've been so busy at work and tired when I get home, that I have barely read 2 chapters in a month...

Have been researching resources for the BSCI and CCNP and I think I will buy a 2610XM router with 128DRAM/48Flash with 1 WIC 1T, which runs the SDM, plus a 3550 Multilayer switch for the Switching exam, which can implement QOS. Add 2 2620 or 2621 routers for WAN, plus two Catalyst 2950 switches. Might add a couple of WIC T1 U Interfaces for ISDN. Oh well, there goes my spending money for a while.

I think pasing the CCNA motivated me to delve deeper into Cisco hardware and IOS.

Either way the push to move on is there. So I will not fight it, just need to decide what to do next!
