Penetration Testing TV Series Coming

I hope it's a lot better than those ghost hunting TV shows that feature a bunch of idiots running around doing essentially nothing. A lot of software and network testing is very tedious, repetitive, boring, and unglamorous. It will take more than a few fast camera shots of Justin Long driving a Midnight Blue Jetta to make such a show like that interesting.

Do any of you guys watch Hak.5? It's not pen testing or anything serious., but it's often entertaining and interesting. It's a nice departure from studying, every once in awhile.

I think the poster from the site listed said it very well:

Wonder how they socially engineer away the presence of a camera team in the air vents.

An entire camera crew hanging around by the dumpster, in the lobby, shining lights on people picking locks, and talking to people trying to gain information. The only glamerous parts (physical entry and socal engineering) will have to be completely unrealistic. The software and network testing that consumes most of the time is nothing fun to show on a reality show.

Personally I don't expect it to be anything accurate or interesting, but we will have to see. The fact that it airs at 11:00 and 11:30 p.m. on Christmas day doesn't make it sound like they have much faith in it either.

There's no such thing as reality TV, it's cheap scripted/edited crap. :D

We responded to the Year 2000 issue with "Y2K" solutions...isn't this the kind of thinking that got us into trouble in the first place?

Knowing something about how TV shows are produced, I would have to say that is this my basic sentiment too. There's something disingenuous about how those shows market themselves. However, most people know nothing of how their favorite TV shows are created, and therefore will happily believe that it's all real. (Survivor is faked? NO WAY!!!)

Yeah, I was a big fan of Scooby Doo too.

You mean in real life there aren't 50 people looking to date someone at the same time? I'm sure the owner of a fantastic site like this would have that kind of popularity icon_lol.gif.

That is like telling some people:

    1. The government doesn't hide little green aliens that came out of UFOs

    2. JFK is not alive and hiding in the white house, nor was he attacked by 250 people at once while putting the blame on someone codenamed "The Lone Ranger" and arrested as Lee Harvey Oswald.

    3. NASA didn't fake the moon landing

    4. Paul isn't dead

Evidence doesn't matter to some people. I come across all of the above examples and couldn't make any headway.

Anyone catch the show? Pretty darn impressive what they did in those two episodes.

I was planning on it but didn't get back until late after being out with my family and went straight to bed when I got home. I forgot all about it until I saw your post just now. Would you mind filling those of us that missed it in on what they actually did? I didn't expect much but am rather curious to find out.

I want to see an episode where they get caught and the cops get them. I don't think they have ever gotten caught though? :D

I did manage to TiVo an episode. It pretty realistic as far as the steps involved and physical and social aspect of it. What I would like to see is an episode where they test a company that actually has people on staff who is at least somewhat security concious. A car dealership? Seriously. And I can tell you another thing too. If a company has a real security policy and are security concioius, the "elite" group on the show would NEVER get permission to put the pen test on Court TV. From what I saw in that series, luxury car dealership security reminds me of casino security; Physical security = world class, computer security = horrible.

When is this show coming on again? I can't find it on my TV guide. Did they just show two episodes and that's all? I thought it was a regular weekday series.

I guess TruTV (formerly CourtTV) decided not to make the Tiger Team show into a series. Both of the episodes are considered TV specials and no more are planned. From what I've read in blogs, people in the InfoSec community are not happy with the show's demise and are complaining using the Contact Us form at TruTV.

Yeah I liked the show. Sucks that they can't make it into a weekly series. About the only show on that channel I liked.

One fatal flaw in that show was not having a hot, geek chic babe as part of that team. Kari Byron of Mythbusters is the sort they need. Forcing the TV audience to look at three ugly guys for 22 minutes just doesn't cut it these days.

hah, yeah, I didn't think of that. Even those tech shows on the old TechTV/ZDTV had at least one female that was nice to look at.

Those tech shows launched the careers of many a news babe: The Lovely Ladies of TechTV

Natali Del Conte on the TeXtra PodShow is also a tech-savvy babe that would do well on the Tiger Team show.

I haven't heard Kim's radio show in years, but this thread reminded me of it. She would be a good candidate too.

She is on our FM talk station in Pittsburgh every Saturday evening. I don't know the exact time slot but heard her a few weeks ago on my way home. Seemed to be highly focused toward basic hardware/software issues that callers were having.

A talented good looking female would have a much easier time social engineering a guy.

Ive notice that when i get telemarketer calls i listen longer if its a girl and even longer still if she has a nice accent.

I wanted to watch these shows. No plans to re-air? Any links to online footage?

That link I posted earlier goes to their video site. It looks like the first one has been moved back to the third page under new videos. I'm not sure if the second one is on there or not.

Thanks dynamik. I didn't even bother going thorugh the other pages. Pretty cool stuff...thought I would see more I.T. related penetration, but good enough :D .
