I have a top of the line machine. P4 2.4G, 1G RAM, 80 G SATA, etc.
Both wireless and wired mice lag. I did almost everything possible...but assme I know nothing.

Solid XP installed with all current updates. The mice died gradually.

First off I would have to guess that you have visited the control panel and had a play there with various settings. I will also guess that you have uninstalled the mice with the device manager.
That being the case I would suggest that you run a full AV and spyware sweep.

Anything else? Did all that. Run Norton 2003 with auto updates and AdAware. Wireless communications? Ham radio, cell phones, and 900 and 2400 remote phones in the house. Network? 4 computer peer LAN.

Try running an online scan - maybe Trend or Panda. Sometimes if you have a virus it can hide itself from your AV software if it has taken hold before the defs recognise it.
I would also run Spybot S&D - have had a couple things slip by Adaware. Usually I use both to be cautious.
