Routing TCP/IP, Volume II

Is Routing TCP/IP, Volume II by Doyle still a good book? It looks like it was published about 5 years ago. Just curious because I want to use it to fill in some blanks with BGP, Multicasting, and IPv6.

Yes, even Vol I is a good book. The foundation topics of TCP/IP have not really changed since it was created. Some of the stuff on legacy routing protocols can be skipped but most of the info is good.

I just read Volume I and it was very informational. You will learn a lot!
"Check both the destination and return path when a route fails." "Switches create a network. Routers connect networks."

Vol. I came out in '98, but was updated in 2005. Vol. II is from '01 and hasn't been updated yet.

Wonder if he'll update it soon?

I'm wondering if there is even anything that needs updating.. I guess that is my concern with this book. I just finished Volume I. It is the shizzle. Probably overkill for the BSCI...oh well. CCIE will be that much easier when the time comes.

Most of what's in Vol II is still relevant, some of the IPv6 has been updated by newer RFC's (such as no more site local addressing FEC0) and the bit on DVMRP and CBT shouldn't consume too much of your time (other than the fact he compares everyting else to it).

It's a good book and worth the time it takes to read it several times :)

I kind of felt like it was overkill compared to the BSCI books. Does anyone agree?

Thanks DT. If you say it's still good then I'm just going to have to read it - twice.

Well the book does go above and beyond the BSCI exam topics. It isn't written for the BSCI exam though so it does go a little deeper and off topic a bit if you are using it for BSCI study. I didn't start reading until after I took the BSCI exam and it is a good natural progression.

I don't mind if it goes beyond what is required for the exam. I generally don't feel comfortable until I can solve scenarios I come up with, which are generally outside the scope of the exam. For me it's more about becoming competent with the subject matter. The certification is just a pleasant side effect.

I own the original Vol 1 and it's just as informative as the newer release. If you can save a few bucks buying the first version of Vol 1 on the used rack definitely do so.

Yeah, I've already read volume I, second edition. I'm talking about Volume II, which only has the first edition so far. Volume II focuses more on BGP, IPv6, Multicasting, and some other stuff, whereas Volume I was definitely geared toward interior routing protocols.

I own vol 2 and it's still just as valid as anything else.

If you want further reading on BGP I suggest you check out "BGP Design and Implementation" by Zhang and Bartell, Cisco press.
