The trials of finding decent employment

An interesting post from 10 years ago. It's clear that many of the hiring difficulties encountered today haven't changed much since 1998. To all those struggling to get on..its not a new phenomenon!

And it looks like hiring agencies haven't really improved in their usefulness either.

I liked the lady who called me the other day look for something with Mac, PC, and Apple experience, and experience with Leopard and Tiger would be a plus.

Recruiters aren't the best when it comes to understanding different technologies. I remember a job post back in late '98 or early '99 that was looking for someone with 5 years of Java experience. Since the first public release of Java wasn't until 1995, they must have been trying to hire James Gosling.

I interviewed with one of those hiring agencies one time, they were looking for "Certification in MCSE and Microsoft". After the interview, they contacted me shortly afterward and said I didn't meet the criteria because I had an MCSE certification and not Microsoft certification.
    IT guy since 12/00

Recent: 11/2019 - RHCSA (RHEL 7); 2/2019 - Updated VCP to 6.5 (just a few days before VMware discontinued the re-cert policy...)
    Working on: RHCE/Ansible
Future: Probably continued Red Hat Immersion, Possibly VCAP Design, or maybe a completely different path. Depends on job demands...

Shortly after I passed the 70-270 test I was checking out jobs and found a job as an Active Directory Architect.

Well that sounded interesting but the pay wage was less than what Burger King Pays $14,000/year.

Wow, maybe i choose the wrong field?

Perhaps they read it as Maybe Certified in Something Else

Made me smile when I read it, looks like we need to abandon all hope now icon_lol.gif

My advisor once showed me a Monster.com ad looking for a Network Specialist; the employer needed someone who had either a CCNA, a CCNP, or a CCIE. Clearly an HR drone was putting the ad together and knew nothing about technology. What CCIE would bother applying for this?

please tell me you called them back...not to yell, just to let them know what the 'M' in MCSE means...
