single mode fiber restrictions

Morning all ....

Sorry but my q is not related to any CCNP topic

.

Is there any kind of restriction to connect two switches(lx/lh gbic or sfp) directly with SM fiber if the distance is less than 100 M?

My friend is telling that this my burn the gbic/sfp or damaging the switch.
Is that true?

I think it's more of a GBIC restriction....

Table 1 provides cabling specifications for the Cisco GBICs that you install in the Gigabit Ethernet port. Note that all Cisco GBICs have SC-type connectors, and the minimum cable distance for all GBICs listed (multimode fiber [MMF] and single-mode fiber [SMF]) is 6.5 feet (2 m).

Always look at the spec for the module to see what type of fiber it takes. Here at work we use SM for connections to Telco and MM for connections to other catalysts
