I am setting up the CCVP lab at home and I have the following items:

VERY BASIC QUESTION WHAT DO I HAVE TO ADD TO MAKE THIS CCVP TO THE FULLEST SO I CAN GET STARTED.

ANY HELP WOULD BE REALLY APPRECIATED.

For QoS you'll want 2950s and 3550s (or 2960s and 3560 or 3750s) switches. Inline power would be nice, but power cubes are cheaper. Your switches are good only for connecting things together.

Your existing routers should work for QoS, depending on the interfaces you have available for them.

After the I want to setup my own home CCVP lab. What should I buy and how do I set it up? section of the CCVP FAQ, there's a link to the CCIE Voice Track Lab Equipment and IOS Version (but don't let that scare you, you don't need all that -- not much Unity, and no IPCC or CME in the CCVP). Then there are links to the IP Telephony Deployment Models -- use those as a guide for growing your home lab. Start with a single site. Add Callmanager (or Unified Communications Manager) and a branch office or two to build your lab out for the Multisite Deployment Model with Centralized Call Processing. Then decide how much money you really want to spend on a home voice lab -- you may decide to pass on the Multisite Distributed model.

The MC3810s mentioned are the all-in-one cheap solution for building a beginning home voice lab.

Then if you cruise down to the Hardware Documentation Links you'll basically be looking for analog interfaces and digital interfaces for your lab. For your existing routers, you'd want to get at least a couple NM-2V modules that would work in the 3640 or 2600s. Add some VIC-2FXS and VIC-2FXO ports to those. You may also want to try for some VIC-2EM ports, and just swap them in somewhere to try some E&M interface configurations. The NM-1V and NM-2V carriers aren't as expensive as they had been, and I've been seeing some under $50. The VICs go for around $50 each if you shop around eBay and wait for a good deal.

For the digital interfaces, you want a couple NM-HDV modules with VWIC-1MFT-T1 or VWIC-2MFT-T1. They may or may not come with the PVDMs installed -- so take that into consideration when bidding on eBay. When you price these, you'll see why I like the MC3810s so much.

Toss in a Callmanager server, some 7940 or 7960 (or 7941 or 7961 or 7971) IP Phones, a couple analog phones, and a couple FAX machines (or computers with FAX modems and software) and you probably have enough to get by with.

Hi Mike,

May I ask you a lab question about CIPT exam?

I just got the official self-study book. It seems it's all about Call Manager. I am planning to run it on Vmware together with several IP Phones (hard and soft phones). I am wondering if I need something more for the lab part. Could you enlighten me a little? Thanks a bunch!

You'd probably want the whole enchilada when you get to CIPT.

You'd want your gateways and gatekeepers -- since you'd be using CallManager to configure them. You'll want the analog and digital ports in your voice routers and gateways -- otherwise you really don't have that much you can configure.

You'll want DSP resources somewhere in your lab, so you can configure transcoding and conferencing.

I've got the home hardware lab, so I haven't tried much with Dynamips for Voice. It could save you some money on routers (like for Gatekeepers, Gatekeeper Clusters, and SRST) but you'll need some real hardware for some of the things I mentioned above.

I am reading the CCVP FAQ lab section one by one now. I am afraid I need to be patient to find a specific equipment set on eBay for my CIPT.

If i do have the mc3810, what else would i need to get and how much of each do i need initially. My thing is this i want to get everything and start and dont stop until i am done because i attend 2 schools plus 40 hr work week with little time to spare. I also saw these labs on ebay and i wanted to know which of them would fulfill my ccvp lab requirements better.

That would definitely be at the "high end" -- but it still has a good bang for the buck ratio (since the MC3810 market seems to be drying up).

Kit 2 would give you a MC3810 with 3 FXS ports, but you really wouldn't want the switches in either kit. Other than the CallManager Express Software, the routers aren't an improvement over what you already have.

You'd want at least a few "good phones" (794x.796x/797x) -- the 7912 in the 2nd kit works fine as an "extra phone" somewhere.
