RHCE training

Hi guys,

I want to take some RHCE training classes, however the ones Red Hat provide are over $2000 a piece.

Are there any 3rd party companies who offer training courses for this exam that might be less expensive?

What have you guys done?

Looking for suggestions - currently in NY state.

You could try LinuxCBT their Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 course for $500

I'd say they are pretty close to the current Red Hat syllabus - you'll have to check that out yourself though. I've used their Sendmail package and was impressed with the thoroughness of the trainer, it went through bit-by-bit exactly what was happening in the background looking at the logs as mail was processed.

I haven't used them so I can't give a recommendation one way or the other also there isn't a price given on their website for that one - is it cheaper?. But you can check the LinuxCBT demo page for yourself - if you go 3/4 of the way down you'll see the Red Hat EL-4 demos, you can check some of the other stuff as well if you like.

Just noted you have A+, if you don't use linux day-to-day then RHCE is a level to far. It's not a piece of cake from what I hear even for experienced linux hands - you'll need to know your **** like the back of your hand. Linux+ would be a good basics cert to start off with and then LPIC certs are better in my opinion as far as medium-to-difficult certs as they are multi-skill-leveled and vendor/distro neutral. Having said that that LinuCBT course would cover the Linux+ & LPIC syllabuses as well. So it's up to you.

Yes as of now I have A+ however where I work now all of our servers are Linux based and I am learning to do administration for them.

One of my goals is to reach RHCE certification and I want to be able to provide the company with different options.

So far I have been here four months and have learned quite a bit of Linux - even some advanced things.

I will check out the options and see what will be the best route, thank you.

Install VMware in your Xp or vista and then install Linux into it.

And prepare for RHCE by installing,uninstalling,setting-up network,destroying network etc.

RHCE is quite harder as compare to MCSE security/Messaging and CCNP.

I agree with WanBoy67 that it would be good to start out with Linux+ and/or LPIC and then move on to RHCT/RHCE. I am not saying you shouldn't aim as RHCE is a good goal but I know one person who took the RHCE and failed. He was an experienced Linux admin and told me it was a beast. Anyway once you get your RHCE then you can go for RHCA. Good Luck!

I know this is going on a year since you posed this question. You may want to look at your local Community college. I've attended a couple of classes that are geared towards rhct and rhce. Best part is the community college prices. Each class was $185. Check out this link to see if one is near you.

Did your college happen to have the classes online or in person?

As for my opinion about RHCE is I'd rather have my employer pay/train for it if they want it that badly :P I have no problems with reading a book or two and taking a few classes for credits but the cost for the test is to much.

All the classes i have taken have been in person classes. Sometimes thats the best way with technology that you are not overly familure with. It also gives you hands on experience. The classes are 8 weeks each. you need the first two classes to sit for the RHCT and the next 3-4 classes to sit for the RHCE. At the school my instructor can administer the RHCT test for $150, but he only does that once a year. You would still need to goto another training center and pay the ~$300 ( i don't remember how much the test is) for the RHCE test. Follow the link to see the school's site.
