If you have a boot sector virus are you able to use fdisk /mbr from a 98 boot disk on 9x/nt/win2000/xp systems?

Yes you can for 9x systems - for W2K and XP you use fixmbr & fixboot. This however does not always sort the problem and sometimes further work is required.

    what about nt?

and how would I use fixmbr? from the recovery console?
install cd or win2000 boot disks?

    Which is the best way.

And how should it be done on xp?

    Thanks

Not sure about NT as I have never played with it.
For W2K and XP use the recovery disks - or in XP you can also use the install CD and select R on the first prompt. Never done that with W2K except using recovery disks or with the recovery console built in as a start option.

Fix MBR for NT? I use to use a boot NTFS disk and mount the drives then do all the DOS commands.
