Can a 2514 be used as a frame relay?

2520's are in short supply on EBay. Theres only 1, and the seller is in Australia for 67 US Dollars, but shipping is $160 .

I have a 3640 NM-1FE2W , WIC-2T, a 2650 max memory WIC-1T, and a 2950. I'm still planning on

1 more router and switch, but from reading here, I should get a frame relay. Can i use a 2514?

Are all 2500 series capable of frame relay?

Buy a NM-4A/S serial card on e-bay for your 3640 and make it your frame switch.
It will cost you about $60.

Not all 2500 series routers can function as a frame-relay switch! The reason that the 2520/2521 are good for frame relay switches is because they are cheap and they come with four serial ports built in so there's no need for an additional Network Module.

As stated by miller811, you can just purchase an NM-4A/S and use that in either your 2610 or your 3640 and configure the router to act as a frame relay switch! Hope this helps.

If you're looking to go beyond the CCNA buying a 3640 for a frame relay would be a good investment as it can run 12.4 IOS and has a lot more functionality with the modules.

The NM-4A/S isn't a bad idea, but if you're patient you'll eventually find a 2520. I got one for $5 a month or so ago. Got it for my CCNP studies.

For the CCNA, I used a 2501 for a frame switch. Since you only have two serial ports, you can only do some basic labs - but you can read up on the rest.

Good luck with your lab and your studies.
