How to upgrade a 3550/3560 SMI to 3550/3560 EMI ????

Dear List,
i got 1 x 3550 SMI and 1 x 3560 SMI in hand for lab use, and are planning to upgrade them into a EMI version for self study use. my question is as follwoing.

1. is the following IOS are a EMI IOS ?

c3550-ipservicesk9-mz.122-25.SEC2.bin
c3560-advipservicesk9-mz.122-25.SEE2.bin

2. if i install the above IOS into my 3550-SMI and 3560 SMI, will it turn my 3550 SMI and 3560 SMI switch into a EMI switch ? and works just the same as a factory original EMI switch with all the same function ? and with all the Advanced Routing protocol such as OSPF and BGP ?

3. if this is true that it will turn into a full EMI function , then what will it show
in "show version" ? will it still show SMI ? but it works just the same as EMI after upgrade ?

4. does the upgrade steps are just the same as a normal 2500 or 3600 router ?
with the command "copy tftp flash" ?

First thing: If you bought used switches than you don't have valid IOS license, because IOS is licensed on customer, not on devices. If your IOS licence is valid, then consider that upgrading feature set without paying $ to Cisco is piracy.

SMI and EMI is the old way of IOS features packages naming, the actual one can be found on:

c3550-ipservicesk9-mz.122-25.SEC2.bin = IP SERVICES
c3560-advipservicesk9-mz.122-25.SEE2.bin = ADVANCED IP SERVICES
=> Your devices has already best IOS feature set they can run, you can just update it to the later version. Current one is 12.2(44)SE2 for 3560.

If you will install new IOS on your boxes, then you should see what are you running in show version. Hardware of SMI switch is same as EMI switch, difference is just in what IOS license comes with it.

Marlon, correct me if i am wrong. Is it considered piracy if its being used solely for academic purpose?

There is no difference between learning purposes and full commercial operation. You're violating the license in both cases.

Cisco say that they monitor the download of the EMI firmware. As for whether they do or not, I've no idea.
