Interesting post about new CCDP ciscopress book

This book is going to be too late....Too bad I'll have to read it after I pass ;)

Looks like the new Cisco Learning Network isn't too bad after all.

This is Doug Ingersoll, the Cisco Press product marketing manager. Someone in the thread mentioned our CCDP Quick Reference, http://www.ciscopress.com/bookstore/product.asp?isbn=158705499X, which is an electronic only product. We also have a self-study guide coming out on December 12th (ISBN: 1587055740). It is a second edition of the book that you referenced.

I don't know if this is too late for your needs, but wanted to let you know.

Thanks!

Doug Ingersoll

Yeah no kidding. I think that's why so many people find it so hard.

Speaking of, what are people going to use to study?

I am planning on reading the CCDP self-study by Ranjbar and Hutton, the student guide and the quick reference sheets.

I might have a browse through the following books:
    Campus Network Design Fundamentals
    Top-down Network Design, 2nd Edition

Has anyone used a safari subscription before? I have looked at it, but the price is pretty steep.

    Thanks,
    Mark

You usually get a month or 2 free with Cisco Press books now.

I've used safari. You can get a 10-book bookshelf for 22.99 now(used to be 19.99). You get 10 slots and whatever you put into a slot can't be removed for 30 days. Some larger books take up 2 slots. That's what I used for a while and it worked out for me, but you don't get access to videos or short cuts(books that aren't published yet).

I might try it, I've got quite a few ebooks and I have a ebook reader (cybook gen3) which i love...but there is just something about looking a row of Cisco Press books that I love, even though 9 times out of 10 I use google to find the answers...

I wish I could get work to pay for it!

I make work pay for mine. I easily go through one $50 book a month, so $40 a month is already cheaper, and I have access to a ton of resources. I probably have 30-40 books on my bookshelf. Some of them are just interesting items that I randomly stumbled upon. Also, it looks like you're working if you have a bunch of technical material up on the screen icon_cool.gif

I have been getting back into traditional books though. I want to go outside and enjoy it while I can (and just get away from the screen).

Paper is where it is at. I don't think it is healthy to be staring at a screen so much.

And like dyn said, nothing beats a nice think book on a beautiful day outside :D

    I usually hang out on 224.0.0.10 (FF02::A) and 224.0.0.5 (FF02::5) when I'm in a non-proprietary mood.

    Hi Mark,

I have a Safari subscription through my employer and I have to admit that it really is useful ... I'm guessing that the package is somewhat expensive though as it allows me to download pdf chapters of the books. However, a few months ago I joined the Association for Computer Machinery (www.acm.org). This is in no way an advertisement as my only relationship with ACM is that I am a member. I'm sure that there are lots of other benefits, but my sole reason for joining was:

Full and unlimited access to 1,100 online books from Safari® and Books24x7® and 2,500 online courses from SkillSoft®.

The SkillSoft training isn't perfect, but it is not bad. Most importantly however, it gives you the opportunity to download the official Cisco course material ... which makes preperation for ARCH 2.0 much easier! Basic membership includes this perk and costs $99/year. If subscribing to Safari is costing $22.50/month, this would seem to represent pretty good value for money![/quote]

So whats the verdict then on what CCDA book to use as of right now?

Designing for Cisco Internetwork Solutions (DESGN) (Authorized CCDA Self-Study Guide) (Exam 640-863), Adobe Reader, 2nd Edition
    By Diane Teare
    Oct 12, 2007
    $52.00

CDA Official Exam Certification Guide (Exam 640-863), 3rd Edition
    By Anthony Bruno, Steve Jordan
    Jun 11, 2007
    $47.99 (Save 20%)

    Are these up to date?
  • Paul BozPaul Boz Member Posts: 2,620 ■■■■■■■■□□
Both, actually. The former was my primary source but there were things in the latter that could not be found in the Teare book. I strongly suggest that if you read ONE book get the Bruno/Jordan book even though I think the Teare book is better on 90% of the material. Also, read about the concepts on Cisco's website and use the knowledge center for more info.

My employer purchased the new CCDP training course from Global Knowledge. Thus far it's very good.
