There seems to be so many certificates, what one do you actually start with?

    Agreed, definitely start with A+ certification, then from there consider Network+ and by then hopefully you have some work experience under your belt and can think about more advanced or specialized certs. (Microsoft, Cisco, etc.)

    I've had a look at the A+ exams and some of the questions seem prehistoric. Are the current exams more upto date or will I have to go back to the old books too

    Current exams are more up to date then what you've probably seen.

    A+ is a great start.

    Just another voice added to the masses.

    I did A+ first to cover basic hardware/OS troubleshooting (along with some customer service skills), then N+ for more in-depth networking.

    I passed my A+ in February and I can tell you that most of it was based on Windows XP and newer technologies. I think I may had had 1 or 2 question on things like IRQs.

    Check out CompTIAs website for more details, but I think you will find they keep the test up to date.

    A+ then Network+. Then start with 70-270 (Windows XP) if going towards the Microsoft realm or CCNA if going towards the Cisco Realm.

    A+. I think the A+ stuff on this site is a bit outdated indeed, but the real test has up to date stuff. You can go with preplogic, transcender, sybex, cbt nuggets, ect..They all have up to date stuff.
