I work on a helpdesk supporting about 300 users, mostly local, with some remote. When taking a call or ticket, we first use our own individual knowledge, then ask our co-workers, then look it up in our KB for most known issues or settings; one of those things in the KB is to run chkdsk for certain problems; for some reason, it fixes something in one of the in-house programs used.........okay, enough background....
riiiinng! riiinnng!!
Me: Helpdesk, Rick speaking...
Them: I keep getting this error...blah blah blah....
Me: Okay, we are going to run a utility that will check parts of the hard disk in your computer. This shouldn't take too long, and will require a reboot, so save any work you have open now, and let me know when you are ready...
Them: (few minutes later)....Ok, Ready!!
Me: Click the Start button.
Them: The what?!?!
Them: Oh, that Start button
Me: Click on Run, and type CMD, then hit enter
Them: Oh my...this big black window with all sorts of weird text just came up..
Me: I know. That's good. That's how we run certain commands to the operating system.
Them: Ok, what next? I don't know any of these commands.
Me: I'll spell it out for you...
Them: OK...
Me: C
Them: C
Me: H
Them: H
