Good Prices on Equipment?

Hey guys. I'm about to gear up for the Cisco Exams and starting off with CCNA. I have a few questions about some prices I was given for some equipment. What do you think about these?

2 x 2610XM for $125 each
1 x 2950-24 for $120

Shipping for all three $27.

The 2610's are stocked with no additional WIC's. I already have one 2950 that I bought for $69 including shipping a month ago.

I'd try to get some routers with some WIC's in them already unless you can get some cheap.

1721's + the WIC's are pretty cheap these days on ebay and craigslist. Also some 2611's and so forth aren't bad.

So...the prices for the 2610XM's aren't a good deal or not? What about the price of the 2950? I know I can be patient and try to find another good deal on the 2950, but I kind of want to get everything I need so I can motivate myself during this small break from Grad School.

I can do everything I need on 1721's that I can do on 2610XM's? What am I losing or gaining?

If they have 128/32 Memory/Flash then they are a good deal. The shipping is reasonable for the 3.

There is currently someone offering a quantity of 2950s Buy it Now for $105 each (with the shipping added to the $88 b.i.n cost). You'd have compare any memory upgrade costs and do the math to see if you could do better.

If those 2610s are at least 128/32 then I would think it's a good deal.

If those 2610s have 96/32..... still probably worth it.

I've spoken to the seller and he said that he can add WIC's to the routers. They are only 96/32. I am going to look for that BIN 105 deal for the 2950's. Although I got my first one at 69 dollars, 105 dollars sounds like a good deal.

Oh...which WIC should I ask for? WIC1DSU T1 or just the WIC 1T (serial?)

Alright...I'm going to grab those 2610XM's and purchase a couple of WIC 1T's for about 50 bucks on eBay. He only has ISDN WIC's, so I'm going to take them since they are free...never know if I'll need them and maybe I can do something with them just for fun. I know it isn't on the exam anymore, but I'm sure someone out there is still using it and maybe I could be some help one of these days

I'm going to wait on the 2950...currently bargaining elsewhere.

EDIT: Bought the two 2610XM's with 20 dollar shipping and bought two WIC 1T's for 40 bucks on eBay. Will work on getting the serial cables needed. Waiting on answer for IOS version on the routers, but I can get the latest from work if needed anyway. The routers also have a 4 month warranty from the seller, so at least I'm protected from DOA and any other problems that I might encounter with used equipment.

Does the 1721 do everything the 2610xm will do?

I'm not sure. I was asking the same thing, but didn't get an answer. I'm sure I could find a comparison sheet somewhere, but just went with the 2610XM's, and thanked God that the five 1721's I bidded on were bought buy others. I'm kind of a Cisco noob so I couldn't tell. Hopefully I will have more insight as the years go by dealing with Cisco. The 1721's are going for about 30 bucks on eBay.

Alright...I have the 2x 2610XM's and one more 2950 that I bought on eBay for 73 dollars including shipping that is enroute.

I'm now looking at adding another 128MB of SDRAM to the 2610XM's. They currently have 96, but I haven't opened up the case to see if it is one 92MB chip or a combo of 64 and 32 in the two DIMM's.

The 128's are listed for about 20 bucks each on eBay including shipping. Good price on these brand new??

It'll be 32 + 64. You can check by running "show c2600" on the 2600XM and at the end it'll tell you.

What does it say for ROM: System bootstrap when you do "show hardware"? If it comes up as "ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(8r) [cmong 8r], RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)" then it means you can expand the memory to 256MB otherwise it'll max out at 128MB (64 + 64).

You have to physically swap out a ROM chip to upgrade the bootstrap. You can't do it from software.

I do have that latest ROM version, and was relieved when I started researching upgrading the memory. This is in the "show version" and not the "show hardware", but I will do that when I get home.

According to the second show version, it looks like one of the routers have 128MB instead of 96 like the seller said. I will have to check it out for sure when I get home.

Ah great. show version and show hardware will give you the same info. You don't need to run it again.

Chances are it'll be 64+64. Most resellers will yank out any 128MB cards and replace them with 2x64MB.

You'll need 128MB RAM for 12.4(21) AdvEnterprise. The last technology release for the 2600XM series would be 12.4(15)T6 and you need 256MB RAM and 48MB flash for the AdvEnterprise feature set. 12.4(20)T dropped support for the 2600XM.

Thanks Tiersten!! I'll just get one 128MB memory module and keep the other as is until I need more in the future. That'll give me 192 in one and 128 in the other. I shouldn't need more than that for CCNA Studies.

I used the Cisco Feature comparison and it looks like the 12.4T version has a lot more features but I'm not sure if it will be relevant to the CCNA Labs I'm doing. I'll probably just stick witht he 12.4(21) AES instead. Do you know? If not, I guess I will find out as I go through my labs

Yeah. 128MB will be plenty for what you need in the CCNA. You can always upgrade in the future anyway since you've already got the latest ROM.

12.4(21) AdvEntServices will do everything that you need for the CCNA as well. The technology train (T releases) are where all the new features are put in. The T series will become the next mainline release.

For the CCNA cert you'll need to be familiar with Cisco Security Device Manager which is a web based GUI that lets you configure and monitor the router. I'm not sure you've got enough flash to be able to store IOS and SDM together. Its not a big issue because you can actually install SDM locally on your PC and just tell it where the router is.

Well I guess I got lucky. The router with 128MB of SDRAM is actually one DIMM. I'm still going to just buy one extra and separate the 32 and 64 between the two.
