MPLS and FEC

I have been reviewing MPLS and I am kind of confused on what the big deal is with understanding a packets FEC in normal routing as compared MPLS FEC.

Normal routing determines a FEC by determining an IP to interface lookup at every hop while MPLS only will do it at the Edge Routers. I can see there being a benefit of speed a couple of years ago, but now with hardware based ASICs I wouldn't imagine their being a latency issue with a packet FEC being determined hop by hop.

Can someone help me understand what I'm missing?

One of the bigger benefits to running MPLS in a large network (such as an ISP) it the ability to have a BGP free core. This means you can have the core of the network without needing to have s complete Internet routing table on it.
