CCDA - does that renew CCNA?

in CCDA & CCDP
Hello all - I'm new here but thought this would be the right place to ask. My CCNA expires in April '09 and I was considering going for CCDA certification as a step toward CCDP. I know I now need both of those for CCDP, so does successful completion of the CCDA exam recertify me as a CCNA and start the 3 year clock again?

    I think you're out of luck mate.
    As far as I'm aware only a 642 series exam, the CCIE written or one of the specialisation exams renews your CCNA. I'm pretty sure the CCDA is from the 640 series.

    That is correct and the CCNA specializations such as the CCNA Security will re-certify but not the CCDA. If I were you I'd try and knock out the BSCI or BCMSN to re-certify and knock out one fo the exams for the DP.

    Yeah, was just looking at that. Looks like 642-901 will renew CCNA and satisfy a necessary exam for CCDP as well. Knock out 2 birds, per se. Then I could tackle CCDA. Guess it is just a matter of what order I take these in.

    CCDA is a certification, not an exam. The Cisco 640-863 DESGN is an exam. Passing the Cisco 640-863 DESGN exam leads to CCDA certification. Since CCDA certification requires the passing of the 640-863 DESGN exam which does NOT begin with the 642-xxx exam number prefix, then becoming CCDA certified does NOT recertify your CCNA certificate.

    Since it is currently Aug 2008 and his CCNA will expire in Apr 2009, that means approximately 7 months to recertify. That also means he's been CCNA certified since Apr 2006. Apr 2006 means he probably took the 640-801 CCNA generation of exam(s). The current CCNA certification exams is the 640-802 CCNA generation of exam(s). There is a direct relationship between the recertification of your current CCNA and the additional material to be learned that has trickled down from the Professional level certification material. So recertification for the same certification can be challenging. But to progress and grow towards the BSCI or BCMSN with the assumption that you've got solid CCNA level knowledge and skills may be harder. I have to say to that the 29 months of being CCNA certified without progressing towards recertification of the CCNA certificate is a long time for dust and rust to form that may put the "...solid CCNA level knowledge and skills..." assumption to be just that, an assumption. Studying for the BSCI or the BCMSN may be like climbing a mountain but only with a solid CCNA level knowledge and skills. However, trying to study for the BSCI or BCMSN as a way to recertify the CCNA certificate after being certified for 29 months is like trying to climb that mountain while sinking in quicksand.

    So I respectfully have a dissenting opinion that instead of progressing towards the BSCI or BCMSN exams, belias21 should try for recertification of his CCNA certificate by studying for the current 640-802 CCNA generation of exams to recertify his CCNA certificate.
