Right ear hurts

...and I can barely hear anything with it. Work has been really hard today because people call for me and think I'm ignoring them. icon_lol.gif

Dunno if it's an ear infection, wax, or perhaps I got ear cancer. ;)
I don't have health insurance at the moment so I'm hesitant to go to the hospital. icon_sad.gif

Yesterday I picked up wax removal from the store and put some in the ear this morning, but that just makes hearing even harder. My ear doesn't hurt as much as it did before. It's not hurting at all right now...I just can't hear :D

Instead of going to an emergency room or Hospital, you could go to an urgent care center. It won't be "cheap" around here it's about $50-$70 with no insurance but it will be a lot cheaper than going to the hospital.

been there it sucks, assuming you dont have an infection try this....

    1. go to the drug store get one of those rubber ball syringes they use for cleaning babies ears along with a bottle of hydrogen peroxide
    2. over a sink tip ur head so one of your ears is facing up
    3. use the rubber syringe to fill your ear with peroxide
    4. keep your head tipped until the fizzing sounds stop, this may take some time so you may wanna keep ur head tipped and go lay on the couch so you dont kink your neck
    5. after the fizzing stops go back to the sink and fill the rubber ball syringe with warm water and it use flush your ear out (be careful not to stick the syringe too far into your ear and dont squeeze the ball too hard, use just enough force to jet warm water into your ear to loosen the crud out, you will probably need to do this step at least a couple times)
    6. look at the brown chunks in the sink and go 'my lord all that came outta my ear!"
    7. repeat steps 1 - 6 until theres nothing left to flush
    8. repeat for your other ear

thats what always works for me, if that dont help see a Dr. right away

had this problem a few weeks ago. Not even the doctor could get it out (kinda pissed about that, but anyway...)

use it for a few days, then flush out with the ball syringe. Worked like a charm!!!

I'll second hugolucky's peroxide method. I use that at home from time to time and it works a charm. A visit to your local chiropractor can really help as well along with some daily stretching exercises. Seriously.

Go and see a doctor straight away and dont put anything into your ear. If you can't hear the drum may be perfeated. This happened to me once over 10 years ago. Pain for a couple of days then deaf in one ear. It will heal naturally but get it checked out and don't put stuff in your ear until the doctor has had a look. If you have an infection and the drum hasn't burst yet it may be about to.

    See a doctor.

Whoohoo, some great advice. I will try the peroxide method sometime, but I may go to an urgent care center(close to where I live) first to make sure it's not an infection.

I agree. Why play around with your health. My wife works in the medical field and told me of this lady who had a lesion on her chest. She never got it checked out and it got bigger and worse. It actually ate a hole in her chest. She finally said something to the doctor and the doctor said that the smell was so bad he almost gagged. Any how long story short, it was cancer, the lady had been ducking revealing this to the doctor for a while and now its spread into her spine and internal organs. She only has days left. Get it checked out. It's not worth losing your hearing over.

I had a similar problem with my bare foot. I had to reboot it. Get it, reboot. Bare foot.

The same thing happened to me a few months ago, it was just a build up of wax. In my infinite wisdom I used a Qtip to clean wax out and jammed it farther in. I could feel the pressure difference in the ear and my hearing was like 10-20% of what it normally was in that ear. It hurt to put pressure on the tragus.

The solution was hydrogen peroxide as others have mentioned. Had to do it about 10 times to eventually get it all out. The sensation when the blockage was removed was euphoric. It's such a relief to get your hearing back!!!

Don't mess around with this, you should go the the local urgent care if you don't have a doctor and get it checked out. Sounds like an ear infection.

Absolutely. Get it checked. A few $/£ is nothing compared to losing your hearing - how would you listen to all the CBT vids icon_wink.gif

This is the best advice. I guess though having to worry about paying for treatment before you go to your GP/doctor or even hospital is a bad thing.

Weird, I have the exact same thing happening right now. Like pressure in my ear canal and giving me really bad headaches. I was born deaf in my right ear, and now my left ear is doing this... not good. My doctors appointment isn't until the 4th of next month.

What a coincidence I am also feeling a pressure on my left ear, it really bothers me that I try to use a Qtip to see if it would improve the pressure.

Yeah, went and saw the doctor. It was both wax and infection. He said that Qtips push the wax into the ear(as I already knew), and I had a massive amount of it lodged in there. The doctor and nurses spent 2 grueling hours prying the stuff out with proxide and intruments. It was extremely painful a few times. Funny thing is, my right ear which felt normal had it worse...they pulled out wax that was about the size of a pebble and had sharp pointy ends. It cut my ear up and I bled a bit.

My ears were completely plugged up.

I can now hear way better than I ever recall. It's like I've gained super hearing powers. icon_cool.gif

I had infection, but they gave me some stuff to help that.

Thanks for the advice, I don't think I would have been able to get it out myself.

Damn, that's a crazy amount of wax. Have you by chance had an occasional pain in your right jaw in the past few months?

Upon getting home I found my new laptop waiting in front of the door, so all is well in the world.

The doctor actually said you shouldn't clean them out frequently with peroxide, and that you shouldn't put ANYTHING in your ear. He said to just clean the outer parts of the ear and the wax will come out on its own...and that attempting to clean inside will just force wax into places that are difficult to remove them from.

This was my experience that last time I had an infection about 10 years ago. When they got it all out it was like when you've been in a pitch dark room for hours and then get exposed to sunlight, except for hearing instead of sight.

glad its good to go. I had more than one "pebble" in my ear, and one looked like a little log that was cut down in a forest :)

I'm undecided if I should be motivated to go have a doctor check this out or if I should just stay content and pretend like I don't have any crazy crap inside of my head.

I haven't seen an ear specialist and I'm 29, this could be what's causing the pressure and my jaw hurting, any idea what kind of peroxide should I get so I can try to put this in my ears tonite? I do have hearing problems. Maybe there's huge wax inside my ears.

I'm scared to go to the doctor specially if my ears will bleed, I'm suppose to go out tomorrow, it would be embarassing to have wax coming out of my ears.

So I can just apply this directly on both my ears right? do I need to use a spoon to force the wax out as well?
  • undomielundomiel Member Posts: 2,818
Woah hold up there cowboy! No sticking spoons in anyone's ears around here. Take a look at hugolucky's instructions. You just fill up your ear and let it percolate til its done and then rinse it all out.

ROFL Yes you can! jk there is an ear spoon called back in my country, sorry I should have explained it more, it is very sharp and it hurts like hell, I hated that damn thing cause my grandma would clean my ears with it when I was a kid.

This thread makes me really glad I don't live in the US. Go to the doctor, this is your hearing for crying out loud - it's worth whatever it costs down there.

Unless you have a huge amount of hard wax buildup they can usually just use an ear syringe and flush it out with water. Pouring hydrogen peroxide will work, but since rubbing alcohol evaporates it is better for this than hydrogen peroxide, which leaves water behind which makes for a nice breading ground for bacteria (warm and wet) and if you have a perforated ear drum (from trying to clean it out with a Q-Tip for example) you're asking for a nasty infection that could seriously and permanently damage your hearing. If the rubbing alcohol hurts then you have a damaged eardrum and should see an ENT specialist, but you won't have caused any further damage and you'll know about it and can treat it.
