1400 for a Uhual and car tow behind from Missouri to Phoenix, this is highway robbery.

Penske isn't much cheeper, and neither is ABF freight. Seriously, I'm paying for the gas, 1400 to rent at truck

I'm looking at moving myself to MN from UT and I didn't think it'd be that expensive to rent a damn uhaul..... argh, that does suck.

That's my plan for my next move. I've done this a few times on my own, and that's enough. My friends can easily break that much of my stuff, so I'm going to let the pros shoulder the responsibility.

Something of interest I found, I just got a quote from Uhaul and the rental with a trailer to tow a car is going to cost 1300$, and thats still with me paying the gas. I just looked up some random pro moving company and they'll do all the work for 1090$ and that includes gas.

I think I'll take the more expensive option of doing it myself...

edit: Just noticed that is still doing the packing/unpacking myself, they do the hauling, but still a hell of alot cheaper, plus the idea of not moving my stuff in the dead of winter sounds nice

. ouch that stings. i would have had to pay just over £750ish for my 150 mile move if i remember correctly. Thankfully the family chipped in with the vehicles etc and i payed for the petrol so it was sooo much cheaper.

If you have a SUV or a truck, it might be possible to rent the little whitebox you haul and put your stuff in it I don't know what it's called, I would also get rid of furnitures, since you can just bu them of craigslist or even save more by doing this, gas is not cheap nowadays.

I think we are going to start looking at what our stuff is worth. Small trailer across country is only $400, and I already have a hitch.

Moving across the country is great, but only if you don't have nice things lol

I"m starting to think that might have been the cheaper option. THe only thing I have of real value is about 1300 records. But there not near and dear enough that I could leave them behind. Well on a brighter side my current employeer did pick up a part of the tab.

Well make darn sure you get a written and signed contract, not just an estimate. And believe me, the "pros" broke more of my stuff than me and my friends ever did. They gave me a "worst case scenario" high-end estimate. So thinking to save money, I ended up packing about 100 boxes on my own, brought everything out of storage myself (to avoid the shuttle charges) and even got rid of several large items before the move all in order to bring down the final cost. Based on his detailed checklist, this should have saved me about $2000 off the $6000 estimate for my move from the mid-west to the south.

Well the movers got here, claimed the weight was over the estimate, and refused to deliver my stuff until I let them charge an additional $2000 ABOVE their original estimate. Then they managed to break our dresser and several smaller items, left behind some equipment from my shed, and actually lose some expensive items. They also purposefully make the claim process so difficult that you never really get reimbursed for anything.

Next time I am having a house sale to get rid of 90% of our stuff and use a U-Haul for the remainder. I'll never deal with crooked movers again. You can google about all the typical ways they scam/overcharge you. Wish I had been a bit wiser and less trusting 5 years ago.

See I would love to do that but.... I drive a 350z, which doesn't fit much of anything, and I don't want to buy a new motorcycle and piano. The driving adventure starts tomorrow

I've moved 370 miles twice and it cost me about £150 each time (£40 diesel each way and van hire) + 18 hours of my own time driving / getting the train back......hired a ford transit van when I moved from Edinburgh to London but then had to go back to Edinburgh on the train to get my car, drive back down so 3 trips around 1200 miles in 2 days

2 and a half years later done the same thing but in the opposite direction, relocated back to Edinburgh....

I guess that's ok if you can fit all of you posessions in 1 trip in a Transit / 1 trip in the car.

If I was to up sticks from here, I would probably need 2 transit runs now I'm a home owner and have actual furniture to move!

Isn't it cheaper to buy an old F150? or something like that?
